Re: My new Project to stop me using this

    More painting.

The instructions for the paint say NOT to apply heavy coats but the only way I can spray without orange peel IS to apply the paint in heavy coats. Have to be very careful not to get runs though.

I did the panel that goes where the heater bubble was in the light coats and got some orange peel so I did the scuttle grill in heavier coats which resulted in very little orange peel.

I fitted the seat mount bars with tek screws and a handle so I could rotate them while they were sprayed.

Then it was back to the fuel tank.

I bent the 2 flat pieces into u shaped sections that will be welded together to make the tank.

I have contacted the spray painter to say the car is ready to paint, hopefully he can do it this week.

Still waiting for the painter to come to spray the car. The weather has been crap... either too hot, too windy or too wet

Meanwhile the fuel tank has been welded. Now I have to sort out how to mount the pump.

Re: My new Project to stop me using this

Well it has finally been painted.

But you know what, even experienced spray painters have problems with orange peel as there is a fair bit present. His reason is that is very difficult to get a good flat finish with the synthetic enamel I am using even though we put a hardener in it.
Also there a few places that will need redoing as they feel a bit rough.
Anyway I can't complain too much as it was done in my shed not a spray booth and it cost me a tenth of what I was quoted to get it done professionally and what I have saved I can spend on more important things...watch this space

Re: My new Project to stop me using this

Now there are people on this forum who hate body colour showing behind the grille and I am one of them. *
Also I like satin black around the windows so....

after a couple of hours masking up and 20 minutes painting this is the outcome

    * It was a PITA masking up to paint the front so I can understand why people don't do it but I reckon it is worth the trouble.

Re: My new Project to stop me using this

Well it has been quite a while since I have posted an update.

My level of enthusiasm for working on the car has been zero for since it was painted mainly because it is summer here and it has been mostly very hot sometimes 40 deg C and I was a bit dispirited with the quality of the paint work. I have since discovered that the orange peel is probably a result of the spraying pressure being too high as I noticed that after the painter had finished my pressure regulator was still set at my usual 90psi. I
assumed he would have set the pressure he wanted but I suspect he didn't as I doubt that he would have reset it to 90.

And then my 83 year old widowed mother had a fall and had to go to hospital. So for the last month I have been travelling to visit her and then I had to find an aged care facility for her as she can no longer live at home by herself. I had to wade through a heap of bureaucracy and paperwork to sort this.

So after a lot of stess I have regained some enthusiasm and have started on the car again.

First I want to put a 2 post hoist in my shed where I had ramp and half depth pit so I have been working on that with some help of mate's son to save my back.

The steel ramp has been removed and part of the concrete floor broken up and 2 large holes dug that will be filled with reinforced concrete as a base for the hoist.

A convenient hole to get rid of the debris

Took a break from that to do some painting.

First the dashboard. I should have painted it before putting the cage in and painting the shell because it was a PITA to mask it up.

I wasn't going to paint the back panel black even though I like the look because I couldn't be bothered but then I saw a video on Youtube of a white MK2 rally car with the rear black panel and just had to change my mind.

More mind numbing masking up. I really am tired of doing this

    But the end result is

I have been in regular contact with the guy building my engine to get updates. There has been a couple of hiccups along the way that have not been his fault so it is taking longer than I expected but I have told him I am not in a hurry to get it.

Anyway it has now been built and run in and is now in the process of being mapped. He is experimenting with something new for my engine so we are hoping that it will be more powerful than his previous builds.
If it isn't then it will have to be stripped down and rebuilt to the old specs

Yes we have a lot of long roads but I wish we had more corners so that we had more roads suitable for tarmac rallies.

I would like to see the end result too

Still bloody hot here... 45º in the shed yesterday.

I was a bit concerned that the attachment point for the front tow eye would not be strong enough so I've welded a tube in that will pick up on the chassis rails.

Still preparing for the hoist. Got a couple of mates to help me install a roller door to allow access to the hoist.

Re: My new Project to stop me using this

I bought a used grille on eBay when I started this project so now I have to restore it.

First I gave it a coat of satin black and then spent a hour masking ( when will it end ) so I could do the silver bits.

I had a spray can of silver on the shelf which I used but it really wasn't the shade I wanted but it will have do because I am not going to mask it up again!

The final touch.... a new Ford badge. Fortunately they are still available because the old one was rubbish.

Still progressing with the hoist. Another section had to be cut out of the floor to make the mounting footprint wider.

Next on the "to do list" is how to attach the fibreglass bonnet.
Because it is so light my plan is to have it so it is just lifts off and is not hinged.

    Started on the rear first.

Made up these mounts with a U section on top where a bracket on the bonnet will slide into.

The mounts are only tacked on , I will weld them properly after I make sure it will work.

Re: My new Project to stop me using this

These are the brackets I've made to clip into the mounts on the body.

    They bolt onto the bonnet

It has worked out really well. The bonnet slides into the mounts and the plastic fuel hose locks it in nicely.

I will be getting some more suitable bolts and my even get some laser cut plates ( these ones I have cut from some aluminium sheet using a hole saw).
I will also paint them white.

Next job is to sort the front mounts.

Re: My new Project to stop me using this

Finally I have got the floor ready for the hoist. The concrete has to cure for 2 weeks then it can be installed.

So I was able to get back to working on the car.

First thing to do was to finish the mounts for the bonnet. I have always liked the look of the bonnet pins used on early 70s Ford muscle cars so I bought a set ( Chinese reproductions of course ) and fitted them.

I had to make up some rubber mounts for the bonnet to sit on because it doesn't have a return lip like a steel bonnet.

I have added some platforms to the rear mounts so that bonnet can sit on them and then it can be pushed back into the slots.

My engine is ready but the builder is waiting for a radiator and dry sump tank to be supplied ( the manufacturer of these is very busy ). When they arrive it can all be crated up and shipped.

    Can't wait to see it

Re: My new Project to stop me using this

Next is attaching the boot lid.

After a lot of I couldn't come up with a different way of mounting the boot lid so have used the usual sliding pins but I did find some black ones to match the black parts of the car.

Because the lid is only a single skin I had to sort out something for it to rest on.

I found these chair leg rubbers stashed away and they work perfectly.

I cut a couple of blanking grommets in half to go over the pins on the body.

Off to buy some bolts tomorrow to attach everything.

Re: My new Project to stop me using this

Got all the bolts and nuts I needed so could continue.

Mounted a pair spring catches to the rear of the boot. Again a blanking grommet cut in half was perfect to go under the bracket on the boot.

Then I fixed the spoiler to the boot.

I found an old ESCORT badge and with a coat of paint it looks as good as new.

At last I could put the RS decal on that I have had since starting this project.

Spoke to the engine builder again today ..... still no sign of the radiator and tank so I am still waiting

Nice work as usual!! Is the boot mounted part of the spring catch riveted to the boot or bolted? I have a pair somewhere ready to fit but have not looked at them.

I used these button head socket screws with the heads "painted" with a felt pen which will probably fade eventually.

Re: My new Project to stop me using this

    Some more progress.

Got out my touch up gun and sprayed where I had added bits.

Then I went about mounting the FIAT Uno single wiper motor I bought off eBay UK. Unfortunately Unos where not sold here in Australia so I probably paid too much for it at least I got one.

I managed too find a Uno wiring diagram on the web and with a bit of I got it to work on 2 speeds. The intermittent needs a separate control unit so I won't bother with it. I got the self parking to work but it parks on the driver's side which I don't want so won't bother with that also.
After I sorted it out I made a loom for it and bolted it in.

It is biased slightly to the driver's side because there was a raised section in the bodywork where it fitted nicely.
I used a cut down spacer from an Escort wiper and it also had the right angle to fit flush to the body.
I had to drill a hole for it in the scuttle grille and make a washer to trim it ( it will be painted white and glued on).

I will have to fill in the original hole ( more touch up painting )

The motor didn't come with a wiper arm so I nicked an arm off a mates E30 BMW and it fits perfectly onto the spindle. Unfortunately he wants it back so I will have to find another one.
