    Good news and bad news!

The good news is the motor has arrived

and the bad news, I wrenched my back this morning so I can't do much atm. One of my mates was very keen to to take me to pickup the motor from the shipping company otherwise I would have had to wait until my back was a bit better.

Sorry no photos of the motor yet. I am waiting for a mate to come around tomorrow to help me stand it up.

Some things that were in the box:

    Twin plate clutch

    Exhaust manifold

    DTA ECU and dash

Loom ( that will take some working out I suspect)

Unfortunately my back has not improved and as you can imagine I am feeling pretty as progress on the build has stopped.

The motor is a 2 litre not a 2.5 as I want to compete in the under 2 litre class. It is the first 2 litre Roy Millington has built using a 2.5 height block and long rods and he says it is the best 2 litre he has done and sounded fantastic on the dyno.

Does that have a 'standard' Pinto cast iron block?

It is Millington's own alloy block. If you look at the photos you will see it doesn't have the distributor/oil pump drive part. This means that the dry sump pump can be mounted there and is driven by the toothed wheel that would have driven the distributor etc.

Be nice if my regs allowed alloy blocks!!

You must be one chuffed bloke. The engine meets the standard of the rest of the car. Very impressive all round.

Re: My new Project to stop me using this

Unfortunately my back has still been giving me grief but it is now a bit better so I have eased myself into working on the car in the past few days.

The crossmember has always been a very tight fit and I suddenly realised why. It was made for a UK Escort which doesn't have a strengthening plate on the RH chassis rail like the later Australian Escorts.
I had to cut a section of this plate out to allow the crossmember to slide easily in.

I have attached the gearbox to the motor so that I can start to figure out how to mount everything.

The Millington is a very tight fit in the engine bay. There are clearance problems with the steering rack mounts, the exhaust manifold and where the throttle cables go onto the roller barrels.

I will have to cut a bit out of the LH rack mount to allow the motor to to be offset to the left to give enough clearance between the exhaust and the chassis rail. Also I will cut a section out of the firewall for the cables.

More holes cut in the tunnel to allow the gearbox to fit.

Look what I have done to the paintwork now

This has made much more room to access the throttles and allowed the motor to go back a bit to give more clearance between the sump and the crossmember.

Still having trouble getting clearance for the exhaust manifold. Having the gearbox on is not helping so as I have sorted the for/aft position I am going to take it of to make it easier to get the side to side position.

Then I will be able to do the mounts. That is after putting the motor in and out toooooo many times

Re: My new Project to stop me using this

I had a bit of a think about an easier way to approach positioning the motor.
I screwed the crosssmember to the lifting table so that the mounts were level and then sat the motor on some blocks to set the height and angle.

I bolted the exhaust manifold on because it was impossible to get the 4 way joint onto the pipes with the motor in situ. Although to raise the motor into the engine bay I have had to remove the air horns to allow clearance for the exhaust.

So I then put the motor back in again ( without the gearbox but with the bellhousing) and juggled it around to get clearance.

Still had problems. I set the motor a bit to the LHS to give enough clearance for the exhaust and rack mounts but that position does not allow enough clearance for the air filter and steering column

    More

I decided the only solution was to take a notch out of the RH chassis rail ( sorry Glenn ) to give more clearance for the exhaust and allow the motor to move to the RHS.

Of course I will need to strengthen the chassis rail around the notch.

    This is getting tedious
