    Steering rack bronze bush query

Hi all, Pardon my stupidity, where do the bronze bushes fitted to Escort steering racks actually fit. Behind the pinion or in the rack tube ends? I have a lot of endfloat in my pinion and am looking to rebuild the rack. Any advice gratefully received. Thanks in advance, Paul.

Re: Steering rack bronze bush query

Recently replaced all 3 plastic parts in my rack. Large one to left of pinion in the larger part of the main tube that the rack runs in,tight fit, pushed in by a press. probably could be knocked in or pulled in by a threaded rod. Once this has been replaced you may find the the endfloat may have been taken out, if not shims need to be added or removed. Also replaced the 2 small cups at each end of the rack and steering arms, though the plastic ones looked fine after many years of rallying. There should be a roll pin to be drilled out to separate locking ring. Re tighten and pin again, though I didn't for ease of adjustment in the future, just used thread lock, then used plenty of grease not oil to lube. Sounds complicated but its not really and certainly cheaper than a replacement. Hope that helps.

Thanks apmonty. Did you replace the plastic parts with bronze? Am I right in assuming that there is only 1 bush in the actual rack tube? One last question. Where did you buy the bits? Many thanks, Paul

Yes all bronze and only only 1 bush in the tube Seems strange to me due to the amount of leverage at the other end. Had them a long time before i replaced them, but bought from Burtons http://www.burtonpower.com/bronze-st...k2-mp1012.html got to be better than the plastic original. Cheers Lee
