oil recomendations for 2.8 turbo Cologne engine....

Hi guys. Can anyone recommend a high quality oil for my 2.8 turbo.

I heard mineral oils are not good for turbo applications and 20w50 is possibly to thick too.

As it is an old engine my thoughts are the zinc content needs to be high to provide protection to the cam and bearings.

    Thanks!!

I do think a mineral 20w50 will work. That's what I run in my Pinto turbo now.

Just make sure that you let the turbo cool down before shutting the engine off.

Years back when I was working on a 2.8 turbo I think we ran something similar, can't really remember. I used to have 10w40 or 15w40 in my Pinto, usually a Castrol GTX or something. But with my new engine last year I went to high zinc 20w50.

    Thanks Gustaf.

Found a semi 20w50 race oil. Just finding out the properties of it at the moment.
    Will let you know.

Went with Valvoline VR1 20w50 mineral race oil.
High zinc content but not too high to cause issues and is suitable for turbocharged engines.

I would personally go for a 0W40 synthetic - Mobil 1 for example.
The 20W50 is pretty viscous on a cold start, so make sure you give it time for the oil to get to the turbo bearings before revving the engine - 20 seconds or so, to be safe.

0W / 0W40 is too thin for older engines.

0 weight oil on cold starts (0W) will get the oil to the top end of the engine very quickly and improve lubrication, reducing wear versus a 20 weight oil (20W). This is especially advantageous for turbocharged engines (bearings are hydrodynamically lubricated requiring high pressure supply)

40 weight oil (@100 Deg C) is more than adequate for a 2.8L Ford engine, probably even overkill.

The synthetic oil will be significantly more oxidation resistant at higher temperatures, resist thermal breakdown and are much more sludge resistant, which is important as order engines tend to have inadequate PCV systems (fresh air ventilation of the crankcase).
