looking good matey...........not too far to go now...just stick with it.

our little Ford is going to be following a surprisingly similar route...........in fact tomorrow the dust sheets finally come off and he moves home..............to be stripped naked!

    Re: Tiny updates.

Glad to hear the Escort is getting an Ford engine!!

Is it still going to be the 1400cc or have the plans changed?

I'll be keeping a keen eye on that project so be sure to post any updates. I'll gladly help with any questions you may have.

I guess you allready know this but I'd recommend the Elite gear box over the SL72 for the project.

    Re: Tiny updates.

I found a Valencia (or a kent, did not investigate too closely) engine that had a water take off in the thermotat housing. The take off was screwed in by BSP(?) thread. I took it out and the thread matched the thread in my water take off in the cylinder head. I used a hack saw to cut the valencia take off in half. Now it only needs the inner thread (M12 x 1,5) and it is a perfect adapter for the bosch temperature sender.

Thanks. I will. Cant wait to get this fired up now.

We'll hopefully finish the wiring tomorrow and get the engine out for the new box on Sunday.

Got some of the missing bits today and ordered some LED lights for overheating and oil pressure warning lights controlled by the ecu.

    Fuel lines

Made the fuel lines today I had no clue how to plumb the fuel pressure regulator but guessed and plumbed it anyway. We'll see how did I do.

And of course the mandatory pics.

I also got two of themissing temperature senders in place. Now my ecu knows the oil and coolant tem. Still need to get one sender in for the coolant temp gauge.

Wiring is pretty much done. Still need to wire the fuel pump and the two warning leds and thats it.

Did you modify the bulkhead? I can see the lip infront of the heater bulge is different, but did you mod the main bulkhead?

Have you any photos showing the water pipe at the back of the head?

No the bulkhead is completely standard . Exept for the dent in the heater bulge it got when removing the pinto.

There are some timing pics on page three of this thread showing the water outlet.

    Getting there.

Throttle linkage and the header tank got done today. The water hoses and wiring are pretty much done too.
Now all I need is the fan, plumpbing for the remote oil filter, a piece of alloy pipe for the water hoses, and the two wires for the fuel pump once I get the surge pot back from the welder. Oh, and the air filter needs to be installed. Both the filter and airhorns are ordered and on their way.
    Nearly there...just a little more...

The engine bay looks pretty much like the finished item now.

    Re: Getting there.

    Thanks guys for the compliments!

But it remains to be seen which is the most potent recipe for the 1600cc class , the de-stroked Duratec or the Sigma. I am a bit biased but I root for the underdog Sigma.

Tristan, I would not put my money on, not that I have any left by now, on winning it for sure. The competition in my class is very tough with the big powered Pintos, Duratecs and 4-AGE's. But I'll sure be reaching for podium finishes.

The UPS fella popped by today

I give u the brand new and shiny SL72 ... which looks no more dramatic than an old type 9
But I sure hope it packs more punch than one

Also I got my biggest fan today ( ha ha funny)

Fitting these will keep me busy for a while. But its two more things I can cross of my to do list.

Thanks Jason. It's easier to make it nice and tidy when the engine is the right way around
Well the box is out of the bay anyway.

I'm thinking of the razor sharp turn in you'll have when switching left to right? Has to help . Also some more rally guys will get tempted by this engine.. it is so easy to source base units.

    Re: Getting there.

Picked up the Surge pot Today. It came out a bit nicer than I originally intended. Now I quite fancy this upside down bottle shape. The centrifugal forces simply can not make the petrol escape the bottle neck. So it'll do the job. Unless its empty.

Also installed the fan. It is absolutelly a perfect fit. Fits nicely to the radiator and could not be any larger at all. I hope I only need to run the fan when stationary. If I need to use it constantly during track time I'm afraid my alternator will have hard time keeping the battery charged. Still need to do some updates to it. I intend to bolt the fan in to the radiator with studs and wing nuts. This will make for a easy quick removal if I need to have more room to work with the engine.

The fan found it's place so fast I had time to finish up the water hoses. Took no pics of it though.

After they were done I still had some time to take the engine out. Which proved to be a lot easier than removing the previous engines. If all goes well and the the goods arrive in time I'll be putting the engine and box back on Sunday. Ordered the lubricants for the engine and transmission today too. And found out I may well be in for some trouble finding suiting spark plugs for this engine.

Please excuse the poor picture quality. I have broken my proper camera.

I'm starting to be in a world of hurry to get this one running. I made my self a tight deadline. The car has to be up and running within a week and a half. And conviniently I ran in to a minor trouble today. It turns out that suiting spark plugs do not grow on trees around here.
My season starts at within a month and a half And I need to get the engine going and tuned. And hopefully get to know the whole car again. Not mention my wrists feel pretty rusty...So need to get some track time before the first race to get to know and feel the new car. And propably do some adjustments to the suspension. I was thinking of reducing the caster angle.
And if I have time I need new friction plates to my LSD.

Do I need a oil change after running it in with the dry sump 10 litre oil capasity?
I was hoping to change the filter only but am I saving at the wrong place? Or the other option would be not to fill the reservoir complitely during running in.

as long as you can keep an eye on the oil temp i wouldnt use a full 10 litres to run it it but would do an oil and filter change afterwards

    Re: Getting there.

How am I supposed to run it in? I'm used to accommodating the engine to the trials to come. This takes about an hour on the rollers and includes loading the engine increasingly with reving high at the end of the session. Then I usually change oil and start setting up the engine for max power.
How can I stress and load the engine when its not mapped? The mapping includes reving to the limiter right? So no point running the engine in after its been mapped.

Am I to warm it up a few times prior to mapping to get bearings bedded in before mapping. Aand change oil afterwards? This plan to me scrams for 10 litres of oil. Right?

    Re: Getting there.

i dont run mine in as such, i just take it to the rolling road, if who ever maps your engine does it in a logical and sensable order by the time they have done the low speed low load then the mid range it will be ok to start doing power runs to sort the rest of the map,

i dont do any real runing prior to the rollers other than to get it upto working temp, after the mapping i change the oil and call running in done

I sneaked out to the garage today. The result was that the remote oil filter found its place in the bay. Only I ran out of the right type of pop rivets. Need to get some more tomorrow.

Been watching the progress of your SE transplant for a while, most impressed and been a help with a conversion Ive working on.

Using a new stock SE going into a 1980 Mk2 Escort van with a sierra 5spd box, the vans a every day driver so we needed it to be reliable, good around town and the open road.
Been a few issues with fly by wire throttle, engine mounts as we are running aircon and theres not a lot of room on the LH side amonst other things.
Just finishing of the plumbing and then we will strip the engine bay for paint and reassemble.
    Regards
    Brett

Re: Zetec SE Mk2 Escort van

Looks nice. Where is that sump from or did you make it your self? I like those engine mounts and the exhaust manifold too.
There was some intrest here in Finland to install one in a Cortina. Which CWP are you using ?Iis that the gas pedal attached to the inner wheel arch?

I was supposed to but the engine back last sunday but came across a minor set back. The Ford clutch release bearing was the wrong type for the Quartermaster clutch.
But today I had a stroke if luck and I found a suiting bearing. Hopefully the engine will be back in the bay in no time.

Re: Race Escort Zetec SE (engine build)

Great to see you have stuck with the project, many would have given up a long time ago with the hurdesl your had.
Look forward to seeing the results on the track.

Regarding the van, Yes your correct the throttle is set up on the inner guard, seemed the best way to get the fly by wire throttle to work, interesting mix of 70s technology mixed with todays.
We changed the orig 3.77 CWP to a 3.5 for better highway use, should work ok with the over driven 5th box.

    I'm so getting there!

Started putting things back where they belong today. The release bearing issue is now sorted. And it works just fine and is comfortably light to use. ! Also trial fitted the air filter today. Its a pretty tight fit but Id'll have to do. After a little cut in the lip on the bulkhead it fits both lenght and widht wise. Also routed the throttle cable and plumbed and wired the fuel system.
It feels great to put things together for the final time. And now that everything is pre planned and trial fitted the progress seems very fast.
I'm waiting for the final parts to arrive by the end of the week. Still need some hose for the remote oil filter, spark plugs and airhorns which should all be with me by friday.

Again, sorry for the lousy pics.

    Re: I'm so getting there!

The bearing I had in mind was the OE Sierra flat faced bearing. This Quartermaster however takes hemispherical bearing. The flat bearing would loose leverage and momentum. Thus beeing too stiff to use and could snap the cable.
Found a suiting bearing and it needed only minor modifications to the release arm.

    Re: I'm so getting there!

Some of the last missing parts arrived today.

Also it occured to me that I may have some trouble getting the air filter out. It has virtally no room to open up. I hope the foam will give and allow enough room to remover the filter. The foam has a mesh glued to the inner side and i could propably remove it to makr the filter less stiff. This obviously could cause the filter to collapse.

No no. These are made by the same guy who made the trumpets for my Pinto. He got me convinced the very firs time I visited his rollers.

Re: Race Escort Zetec SE (engine build)

The hoses and connectors for the remote filter failed to show up today so the engine will not be fired this weekend
Also confirmed my suspicions about the air filter. Is too tight fit, has no room to open up so its useles
I'll have to check what other options do I have. I think I could try a shallower filter but that'll come
quite close to the trumpets leaving only an inch btween the trumpet and the filter. And I could not use the spacers I bought to try longer trumpets. I'll get the car mapped without an air filter and see do I need longer trumpets. Then I'll figure out the filter issue.

Re: Race Escort Zetec SE (engine build)

I predict the car will be ready today except for the oil hoses.
I'll try and see if I can remove the supporting mesh from the filter. This would allow the filter to collapse and give enough foom to remove it. But it remans to be seen wheter the filter can maintain its form under throttle.
The thought of leaving the filter out of the car entirely is strongly gaining ground in my mind
After all my x-flow and pinto never had air filters. But then again this engine has taken a hundred times more effort so would be sensible to use "proper protection".
