    Coil

    Only part I haven't replaced on my car,s a 2000,is the coil,read up about ballasted and .
    my car is a 1978.
    checks I've done so far.turned ignition on .getting 12v at positive side of coil,as loom has been re taped no idea if it has a resistor in it.
    cleaned old coil up and has the following details on it.
    dq124 12v.oil filled coil.?as car is an import no idea if it's original or not.
    also running a std engine with motorcraft distributor .
    any help cheers murf.

    If you are getting 12v at coil with ign. on there is no ballast fitted. If there were, you'd be seeing 9v at coil with ign. on and 12v only on cranking.

    That check has to be done with the points closed otherwise you will see +12 Volts no matter what.

    If you want to check if you have a ballast resistor fitted (regardless of using points or any type of electronic ignition) take a piece of electric wire and connect the - terminal of the coil with that wire to earth (chassis). Switch on ignition and measure voltage at the + terminal of coil.
