    1978 mk2 Mexico

So brief history bought my mex about 9-10 years ago I think now to replace my mk2 rs 2000 someone desided they needed more than me and nicked!! Aaahhhhh anyway ended up buying this to replace it of a lad in middlesex just before the prices started rocketing thank god. sertently couldn't afford one now. At the time this was a nice straight car which had been looked after to a good standard but not mint so over the years since its been used on and off the odd navigational rally, track day, Ford run etc etc used it as me wedding car as you do anyway its slowly got a bit tired and theres always been bits on it that have bugged me so it's just sat in the garage the last 2years except for 2 Curborough outing gathering dust and dents one of the main reasons I haveing used that much over the last 5 years as its condition has always bugged me have done loads to it since I got it but would be hear rabbiting on for agees so have always know I wanted to go all out on it but just put it of so its now time to start getting stuck in ahh hear we go spend enough time on hear so thought I'd do a thread for it hope you like it and feel free to comet sure I'll need the advice

so been slowly plugging away pulled both doors of to reskin and the drivers door has been badly butchered through its life so on the look out for a replacement for that so been cracking on with the passenger door mainly . at some point its had a new skin and when they did they didn't put any paint on the inner edges so its just rotted out from the inside !!! clowns so have had to repair the whole bottom edge and weld 38 random holes that had been drilled in it god only know why and ive take the whole frame back to bare metal just to make sure ive got all the rot and it makes a better job of it but its all repaied zink and 2k primed now just w8ing for the paint bay at work to be free one night and they will get a couple coats of signal yellow

Started on the rear quarter as well few holes to be welded and started stripping all the paint back. I knew it had had a arch on it at some point but it's not been done the best and loads of filler used to cover it up so that's will be taken of and done properly!!! It has alway had a bad dent in the middle of the quarter from the inside out whi h has stretched the metal so a cut and a bit of hammer dolly work some weld and you'd never know now

So a few bit turned up £400 doesn't buy much!!! spare wheel panel and lower quarter panel to match repaired it a few years ago with flat plate and never been happy with it so doing it properly now, set of rs clocks as I desided it would be a good idea to sell the originals years ago and replace them with a stack speedo what a tool!! Luckily dropped on these for a bargain price for what they are going for these days and there better than the ones I sold so not the end of the world.
Desided I'd do a few hours tonight so bit more stripping on the quarter and found a few more holes one that's been repaired before and what a cracking Job someone had done lol so desided cut out and done properly tonight and it's come out nice, little skim of filler and you won't be able to tell

So desided to start at the back and work forward from there so stripped the back panel take bloody ages with a wire wheel but least I know it's good then. Found a few hidden repairs and pleanty of filler!!! And a few more random bodged repairs. So set out repairing a few of them and desided I was wasting my time and to do it properly got a new back panel ordered so our with the spot weld drill and of with the old panel I've gone for the complete panel so it will make a load better job of it and the beauty of the back panel out of the way means I can access the wheel well and tank well better to repair them better

With the back panel out the way I've started on the spare wheel well cut out the old which I repaired with flat plate years ago did a solid job but its not the right shape and was always temporary in doing so the lower part of the wheel tub needs repairing but when I cut out the lower tub section it became apparent when they put the repair outer arch on they just put it over the old rotten arch and then fiberglassed the inner arch lip so it's full of rotten metal and keg so another panel is soon to be added to the list full inner wheel tub aaahhhhh but as said in no rust and I want it right so just got to suck it up and crack on I suppose lol also managed to get a new bracket for the spare wheel as I drilled it out to put a battery in the boot years ago not knowing they are specific to the rs models what a clown 嵐
Removing the back panel also revealed some rot around the back panel supports in the boot floor and some surface rust in the chassis so out with the grinder and welded them back up after cleaning inside the chassis best I could treated with kurust dont know if it actually work but in for a penny in for a pound and all that they pleanty of zinc 182 to help protect it all welded up and like new and much the same on both sides.
Probably a bit boring really all this and nothing ground breaking but just Trying to do it all right first time round in the hope it last a bit longer I hate bloody rust aaaaahhh
Ow and dropped on a set of rs steelies for the bargain sum of £80 date stamped 78 which is a result so I think that's about where I'm up to need get a tub ordered when back of holiday can then properly attack that side and get it done before I crack on with the tank side please feel free to comment it take bloody ages doing these posts lol

Best get this updated before I forget! so I've been looking at the back inner and outer arch for 2 long so though I best just get stuck in so made a few measurements and put a few support / braces in
Spent an age drilling spot welds and out with the power tools yeah so grinder in ha d a little cut hear little there easy carnt be bad he says
No going back now ha 😂
Best start making it look good again. This has taken me far longer to do than I had expected I just wasn't happy with the fit off anything I know repo panels are never the best but some are just shocking so I've just had to cut weld. Reshape ad bit cut bits till it looks good and I'm happy with it. With the inner arch out it showed up a few other bits that needed a few little plates which was good as you probable. Would have missed them otherwise and they would have creped through after which wod have been crap so got them done first

So few little plates and on with the inner wheel well /quarter panel well wow what a fantaticly shocking quality panel that was whick of course fitted perfect no messing ha ha ha NOT!! So some cutting adding bending and finishing later it was looking something like it's meant to. The wheel arch tub isn't to bad a panel to be fair it's a nice quality pressing but still had to ad a bit of metal and put a few cuts I bit to getting to the shape it should but on the whole not bad this lot took an age to do fitting removing adding etc but I'm happy with how it's come out so all is good

So took some cutting and shaping but got there in the end
So got it all welded up don't want it moving so few molegrips were needed 😂 lol
Arch on wasn't to bad a shape little fettling but the arch/tub weren't to bad
Good goring back and pleanty zine primer and finally happy with how it's come out
Looks good little filler hear and there and will look good when done and hears few pics of why I've done all this few years worth of bodging now gone few latets there and plenty filler
Should only be 2 layers think!!

    Panel delivery best crack on!!
so much the same as the other side everything is getting changed  lol so pleanty of measurements taken and plan of action made
welded in a few braces as there's not much holding it together when it's all cut out, cutting time little hear little there ops not much left ha ha !!
    so that was yesterday efferts.
Carnt believe the quality of some panels managed to drop on a panel from express panels and its really good quality nice thick metal and really well formed but bloody hell there expensive dropped on this one cheap the magnum panel on the other hand shocking and its not even the full area its meant to fit!! You spend more time on the panel makeing them good than it takes to fit them magnum panels seem hit or miss there either quite good or shocking can only put it down to the tooling they use the new panels they have started reproducing seem OK it's just old one they have been makeing for years are crap but hey least they are makeing them just need some fettling
    much better

Opps missed a bit!! So. Quarter's got stripped back
Owww that's nice looks like a deloreon 🤣
Really supprised how straight the quarters are theres genuinely no dents anywhere on either side!! I've started using one of these pads for stripping it back to bare there ace bit expensive but strip back the paint and filler fast without grinding into the metal highly recommended saves a lot of time with a wire wheel!!
    Ooowwwwhhhhh pretty colours
Which reveled the window channel was shot so grinder time!
So cut out and the inner edge cleared back it wasn't much better so by by
    in with the new

    That's much better

    Great stuff
I’ll have to try them pads for stripping, I’ve got too much heat in panels with a wire wheel in the past

So slowly been plugging away at this braced up the rear then got the inner tub and outer arch inner and outer quarter all cut out which exposed more rust fancy that ay ha ha
Which had crepped under the rear shocker tower mount thing sorry don't k ow ats proper name, cut the edge away hoping I could do a small repair but after the amount of brown crust stuff I found thought it best take it of and have a proper look
Which when removed apart from the part I was aware of was all solid but crusty but least it allowed. Me. To do. It all properly now and shouldn't come creeping back after it's all done so got the rooten area cut out and repaired
That done I turned my attention to the shocker tower thingy mcwhatsit as it had had some plates welded to if I'm guessing foe harnesses so cut then out new metal in and welded the sections I had cut out back it cleaned it all back to metal and gave it a load of two pack. Primer and some nice thick coats of two pack signal yellow, nice!
So got all the floor welded and cleaned it all back loads of rust killer on it then same treatment pleanty paint in there
    That's More like it
