Just to clarify a couple of bits, as I have an old banger that I have owned for 7 months.
Can I get the allowance for a Van when trading in a car?
Does the car have to be taxed and MOT'd (mine is MOT'd and Sorn
Thanking you in advance!

You have to of owned it for at least 12 months, imo you'd be better off selling it privately and then getting a cash deal as you'd probably save over £2k anyway
Pushrod, the car is worth 200 tops!

You need to prove you own the car in your name on log book and it must be for at least 12 months, not lest.
The car must be road-worthly....i.e have MOT, road tax licence and insurance covered and over 10 years old car.
I did tried exchange missus' mk4 Fiesta she owned for over 8 yrs with tax and tested, real old banger but drive ok.
One of car dealers happy to take the car for £2k plus special offer added to £1,750, total to £3,750 for brand new (no 2nd hand nearly new cars under scrapage deals) VW Golf TDi estate.
I was put off with payment plans, the best deal was 5 yrs £350 per month installments!
Nah, better off keeping that old banger and avoid putting us in huge debts

Like the others have said, you need to have been the reg'd keeper for at least 12 months.
I'm in favour of the scrappage scheme. I did a deal with my local Fiat dealer on a new 500byDiesel, using a Golf that owes me £0.00, but has been reg'd to me for plenty long enough. £2000 off a car that Fiat previously refused to discount, and just in time as the misus's lease car goes back next month. 1st September - new car-new reg.
All I know is that because of this some very nice low mileage cars are being scrapped and pretty soon you won't be able to buy anything for less than £2k
Some examples of good cars that have been scrapped by my local Hyundai dealer:
1998 ka3,1 owner,fsh 47k miles.
1999 astra 1.4 54k.
1999 tigra 1.4,
1993 toyota landcruiser 4.2tdVX.
1993 mini cooper.
These are all that I can remember at the moment.
They have to be scrapped and a destruction certificate issued BEFORE the dealer gets his money!
and the list goes on,pretty soon it'll be illegal to own a car that's more than 10 years old
^ That's my problem with the scheme, in a nutshell - perfectly good cars being scrapped. Not very 'green' is it!
http://escort.accelerator.org
1968 MK1 Escort 1300GT
1969 'Big Wing' MK1 Escort
1972 MK3 Cortina 1600XL
1984 Sierra XR4i
And other junk I don't like to talk about!
We have an old banger in the family that we've had for a good few years - a P106D that was both my kids learner/first car. I am the owner but due to my laziness its currently still registered in my son's name - I got him a Fiesta in August last year which is also registered in his name. It's stilly fully roadworthy - taxed and tested etc.
What's to stop me registering it in my name and putting the date of transfer as August 2008 on the V5? Would the V5 reflect that or will they assume I am trying it on to gain some advantage on the scrappge scheme?
Why bother re-registering it. Just buy the new car in your son's name.
The Golf I am using, I sold to my inlaws 8 years ago. When I get the new 500, it has to be registered in my father-in-law's name, but so what ? I'm not even gonna bother changing it over to my name/company name. The registered keeper of the car is not neccessarily the owner, so it doesn't have to be in your name at all, and I take it you trust your own son, so no problems.
I trust my son but I can do without the aggro from the banks/credit card companies/parking and congestion charge companies that he owes money to trying to snatch something registered in his name if he was to stop paying them!
We live in hope that one day he'll grow up and realise he's got to pay his way and earn more than he spends! Christ knows where he got that attitude from, we don't owe a penny, but generally, people nowdays don't seem to be bothered by debt like my generation was - perhaps thats partly why we're in a credit crunch - 'easy money' has to be paid back, with interest, eventually.
I tried with the new Focus RS to use my 11 year old Escort and guess what.............they said they would I just need the money from my compo claim and I could soon have a new 09 RS Focus in Green!
But then I could get the Saph painted, ICE install and have the rest of the money for other things
Not decied totally yet, but I would love one. And the government are only putting in £300M to the Scrappage Scheme, so once it's gone, it's gone!!
Scouse.
I dont thing the scrappage scheme applies to buying commercial vehicles aswell as you needing to own yours for over a year.
Commercial vehicles are included upto 3.5t
Cheers Wyn ...
Stuck in the 80's
Back in Black
That's nothing compared to classics 40's/50's and so on,that are being scrapped. For example a running 1954/5 Riley,or the owner of this MK5 Cortina threatening to weigh it in.
An MGB
A 1965 Bond Equipe
I'm sure that the complete car gets crushed,to avoid the parts going onto other classics
Update:The Riley was saved, its last owner, he is 70 years old and had been trying unsucessfully to sell the car for some time - he was delighted that the car was to be saved and it now has a new owner and registration and will be restored.
