Question Mk1 escort grille types and what vehicle where they fitted too.

    Hi all,

    Just a quick question.

I know a fair amount about the Mk1 Escort (Been a nut since i was about 5 years old) but never really discovered what models where fitted with what grilles.

I know (from personal drooling at 5 years old) that the 1300E had a black painted grille with rectangular lamps but i see so many plain aluminium grilles about roo.

I know a plain aluminium grille with a small cutout in the centre top is a TC grille. I think i am correct that the 1600GT (Mexico) was round lamps and black grille only, but i have just bought a plain aluminium round lamp grille without the TC cutout.

I suspect its from an early poverty spec 1100???

Can anyone enlighten me to the rhyme and reason for what got fitted with what?

Cheers, I know its not a life changing question but its a fact thats nagging me

I'm not sure about the black or silver ones but I think the cut out in the middle was for the early bonnet release mechanism handle.

Not sure, I think it was earlier than that tbh, because mines a 69 on an H an it hasn't got the cutout. But mine is also a base model.

Mine's registered 11th month 69. I wasn't sure about 67 myself, but a woman across the road from me had an F plate. So depending on how the registrations were working back then.

Were they August to August, that's how they used to work.

    Just found this.

    Suffix
    Dates of issue
    A January 1963 – December 1963
    B January 1964 – December 1964
    C January 1965 – December 1965
    D January 1966 – December 1966
    E January 1967 – July 1967
    F August 1967 – July 1968
    G August 1968 – July 1969
    H August 1969 – July 1970

So the last one would be consistent with my car. F would be consistent with the old woman across the road from me.

So a quick bit of research later, I wasn't going mad it was 67, Just.

    First generation (1967–1975)

Escort production commenced at the Halewood plant in England during the closing months of 1967, and for left hand drive markets during September 1968 at the Ford plant in Genk.

Now I come to think about it I'm not even sure mine's got it's original grill. I might have changed it back in the late 80's for one off an L reg 72 car.
