    Re: compressor help

I think that coil is a capacitor. Touch the terminals and you will find out (do not do it!)
Sounds a bit like it might be that bit that is knackered. Best get a sparky to have a look really.

you can get a start capacitor from a city electrical outlet amongst others, have you removed the belt to check if motor spins ok by hand ?

    Re: compressor help

Switching it on with your hand on it when you know there is a problem is not the best idea in the world.
Get a sparky to have a look at it!
Whatever it costs it will be a lot cheaper than a new compressor or a funeral.

    Wink Re: compressor help

try maplins there great for all things like capaciters , if its readable there should be a microfarad rating and voltage of the unit ,failing that get on to the company who made the compressor via phone and ask for the details .....once you got the spec on the capacitor ,,,maplins or an rs components store will be able to give u a relpacement
DO NOT TOUCH THE TWO ENDS your get a proper whack !!! short the two terminals with a insulated screwdriver ( with the unit UNPLUGED)
hope this is of some help

    Re: compressor help

    dave wont like this

when its hummin , try giving it a spin on the pulley in the correct/normal rotation. if its the starter cap then it will probably spin up to speed when you give it a head start

edit, dont do this with the belts on as it might grab you

    Re: compressor help

Is this a 13 amp unit on regular plug?

If so is there anything else that's just been plugged in on the same circuit?

I had to put a new ring off the mains for my garage, otherwise the compressor did as you said - buzzed but didn't start running.
