Propshaft balancing
Just a quick question regarding propshaft balancing - roughly how much should I expect to pay for balancing a single piece prop, and does anyone have any recommendations for someone to do it ?
Cheers.

Re: Propshaft balancing
No idea, but let me know when you find out as i have one that needs doing.

Re: Propshaft balancing
Was wondering whether that was the case.

Re: Propshaft balancing
Mine is new, but it still isn't balanced right. They cost £110 new anyway, so it isn't cheaper.
I know it is the prop balance because I put a different one on and it cured my blurred vision.

Re: Propshaft balancing
I don't know either
Unfortunately it had been on my car for a while before I realised exactly what the problem was. I had done the wheels, diff, gearbox etc. I fitted a spare new one i had and it cured it. By this time the other one was rather dirty and I had bought it so long ago it was too late to return it.
It is possible to balance them yourself (sort of). Put a jubilee clip onto the prop and just keep trying it and moving the screw part around until the vibration has gone.
I can't be arsed though.

Re: Propshaft balancing
That's why I can't be arsed

Re: Propshaft balancing
We can do that but you will have the shipping which will be about £25.00
Let me guess Dave... you didnt get that prop from Burtons did you ?
I'll get a price from the workshop on Monday for just a balance and see how we get on.

Re: Propshaft balancing
No it wasn't from Burtons.
It had been balanced as it had a little plate welded to it, but it vibrated like mad. Particularly at naughty speeds.

Re: Propshaft balancing
Funnily enough, mine WAS from Burton's. Garage said it's the first one they've ever seen with no balance weights
As with Dave's, it's too long since purchase to do anything about it, as I went through loads of other things beforehand - it's the only thing left now.
Might see if I can sell it on eBay as unbalanced in case someone wants to sort it themselves.
NeilM, how much for a single piece prop ('79 Mk2 English flange to type-9 box)? I'd rather get a decent new one that I know will be right, than prat about getting this balanced.

Re: Propshaft balancing
£109+VAT
Shipping is £12+VAT
Total Price is £139.15
I will see how much a balance is though, if everything else is new then its daft to pay out for a new one, as much as I'd like to take your money

Re: Propshaft balancing
Most prop places make their money doing commercial props on lorries and other large plant machinery.
Those shafts very rarely turn at anything like the speeds they do on a car so a lot of balancing machines out there dont spin quick enough to get the balance 100% spot on for automotive work and this often shows up at higher speeds on a car.

Re: Propshaft balancing
I had a propshaft balanced at GKN Driveline. They have two sites in the UK, one in Birmingham, the other in Staffordshire.
Tel: 0121 313 1661 or 01538 384278
http://www.gknservice.com/global/com...ce_repair.html
They also have a Motorsport section.
The price & service was really good.

Re: Propshaft balancing
Old old thread but wondering if you are still able to get propshaft balancing done and if you are still based around Bedford as not too far from me. Thanks, Russell
