Private use of a car made available by the employer

    Hello,

I've been offerd a job in the UK witch includes a company car. In The Netherlands you have to pay taxes if you use the company car more than 500km each year. The exact rules can be found here: http://www.belastingdienst.nl/variab...payers-43.html

Can someone tell me how this works in the UK?

    Cheers,

    Mark

    From personal experience;-[
The moment you take the car home it becomes classed as your vehicle in the eyes of the tax office.

The only way you can drive a company car without paying the appropriate tax levy, is if you collect it from work in the morning, and drop it off before going home.

Trust me, I spent half an hour on the phone to them at the start of this tax year

The amount of tax you pay is worked out using the LIST price of the car x a percentage of the co2 emissions iirc.
(its either this way or the other way round)

i too have a company car and the tax i pay for the year is £3000 for the car and £500 for the fuel, this is if i want to use it for personal use or i can opt out and pay nothing but use it for business use only but still get to take it home.

Company car tax in the uk is based on a % of the car's list price.

The relevant % increases by CO2 emissions capped at a maximum of 35% and the list price itself is capped at a max of £80,000.

If fuel is provided for private use then the same % as per the company car is used and applied against a standard annually increased figure which was £16,900 in 2008/2009 tax year.

Hope this is of help, feel free to PM me if you need further info. I have taken numerous tax exams lately so should be able to assist,

    Matt

I get charged 12p a mile for my personal mileage, but have a fuel card.

Work miles booked - total mileage between fill ups = personal miles.

My car does 48 - 50 mpg, so I effectively pay about 6 per gallon for my diesel
