sorry if this is a stupid question, but are these the sort of cameras that actually take a picture when you click the button, unlike most cameras which seem to take the picture whenever they feel like it after you press the button?

Yes they have no shutter lag at all so they take the picture when you want it to
the more you spend the faster they take pics (usually) on mine there is a trick to getting it to take pics faster and thats you have to either use manual focus, or if using auto focus push the shutter button half way and 'prime' the focus point to where you want it, it then takes pics very quickly when you push the button down fully.
would have thought most SLRs are pretty quick, due to better focus sensing i think if you look for the spec it'll have a shutter response time
and are much better quality
also some, like mine, have a sports setting which means with the button held half way down it constantly focuses and you can choose where to focus
wow. that was quick
thanks guys
sony a200, had a nikon d40 before that but got burgled
both very, very good beginners cameras. best bet is go to pcworld/currys etc. and see if they have any on clearance, they are all very good.
mine is not an slr, just a powershot A650is (got it because i didnt want the bulk of an slr, and it has pretty much all the functions bar interchangable lenses) its very good for what i want with the exception of not taking the best low light pics. although i spent quite a while using a 5D in my last job, which was a stupidly complicated camera in full manual mode. but very very good once you got the hang of it.
ive also used a couple of low end digi slrs from canon and nikon, both were pretty good, and took excellent point and shoot images (ie in full auto mode) much faster than your average pocked digi cam
ok... from a quick google looks like I have a bit of research to do as there seems to be a lot of choice and not much between the different cameras. cheers for the help though
DSLR's are mint. i have a sony a100 its not the best, far from it, but ive took some awsome shots. Thing with DSLR's is you take what you know from normal cameras, the quick zoom, angles, bigger/smaller lenses, but also have the ease of use like a digital one. So you can go menu > mode > sports and then go to silverstone and just hold the capture button and get maybe 5 or 6 awsome shots of a car going by doing over a ton.
Don't be put off by this comment becase I love my DSLR but if you get one your about to enter the expensive world of "lens envy". You see someone with a bigger one and you want it and the good ones are very expensive.
lenses are exepnsive, it's true.. but even I can take a decent photo with our one. (Canon 450D)
some lenses are expensive yeah but what you can take with the standard kit lense is still impressive compared to 'lesser' cameras - though i do agree with the lens envy comment
i have a 450d & before that a fuji s9500 bridge camera which i did enjoy using & most of my photo's that you might find on ts in the gallery are with the fuji except the last month or so - trig's track day in june were all with the fiji with a broken selector wheel on it too
pm ffmark, he did have a 350d for sale recently
I still do.
