Angry Atlas axle - freak ?

    Hello !

It's been years since I've posted here last time but finally here I'm again... I hope you all are doing well.

I've got some questions about Atlas axle. The axle we have ( me and my friend - TS member - KR54321 ) comes from Ford Taunus Mk3 1600, which is - as we believe the same car as Ford Cortina Mk5. The diff ratio is 3,86.

We want to fit it with a LSD unit so we thought that we need a unit with 16 tooth spline which is the number that almost all Atlas axles have except Ford Motorsport ones that as we know have 18 tooth spline.
We dissasembled the rear axle and what have we found ? Halfshafts and sidegears have 22 tooth spline - just the number of splines that English axles have. What is that ? How it is possible ? Have You ever seen something like that ?

What should we do now ? Will Englis axle LSD unit fit it ?

The second axle we have is a Ford Taunus one - probably Estate with 4,44 diff ratio. It is still on the car. Will the internals interchange ? Please guide us through this minefield.

    Thanks in advance.

Those are NOT Atlas axle ratios. I strongly suggest you have a KOLN axle. There are very few spares for them and they are not very strong so not worth spending money on.

    Thanks for a hint M8.

Yes. You are right about the ratios. I have noticed that they are different but I forgot to mention about them just like I forgot to mention Koeln axle. I always thought that the Atlas axle is the same as the Koeln axle an the names are used interchangeably - jus like I believe - Englis axle an Banjo axle.

So... Every day is a learning day.

Almost 20 years with RWD Fords and such a mistake. I should browse through the internet with "Koln axle" but I didn't think about it.

So what are the options for an LSD axle ( Ford, non Ford ) for Ford Taunus Mk3 ?

    All ideas are welcome.

Just look for an Atlas axle out of a Cortina. I don't know if the Taunus was ever fitted with one. It will be a straight swap but make sure the Atlas axle you get has the 'Lugs' on the top for the pickup pionts. Then you can buy whatever you want for the Atlas axle.

Taunus has atlas fitted. look for 2.3 engine cars they have them fitted. Mine are both from a 2.3 v6 engine with i think 3.44 and 9" drum brakes.

I know. The problem is I can't find any for sale. Maybe You will be so kind and sell me one of Yours or can tell where I can buy one.
