found this whilst looking up the hilux axles.

Just an addit to this thread you can now buy cambered full floating rear hubs to suit these diffs as run run them on my MK2 with 3 degrees of negative and also have ability to adjust toe as well

The 7.6 diff would be fun!

There's no lengths detailed on there though?

finding the diffs and axles of the right type is not easy or cheap. But they should be stronger

Re: Good info on Hilux axles

Just to add to this thread, this is a pretty common conversion here in Aus.

Quick generally the rule of thumb is:
    - Hilux models RN10 & RN25 are the car models you ideally want the diff from so you dont need to modify.
    - 2wd and 4wd were sometimes different too.. Later model diffs were all wider.
    - Hilux diffs do have tapered axles so if you go to the later model wider diffs you can only shorten the axles so far before needing new ones..
    - However new axles and even floating axles kits with camber are available e.g: Eurospeed Motorsport in Brisbane, Aus.
    - Some later Supra lsd's can be used, however a lot go for the Kaaz option.
    - Disc brake conversion have been done, few different options, some using toyota and others the common R31 brake conversion.

Re: Good info on Hilux axles

So a Hilux axle weight in at 60 kg. Does anybody know what the weight will be for an Atlas axle ? Would it be much lighter or approx the same? I'm considering of using this Hilux axle for my turbo charged rear wheel driven Mondeo.

Are the Hilux axles (gears) stronger as the Atlas axle ? And how about the drive shafts ?

Volvo 240 etc axles are also good for rwd fords ... they are used to be turbo -d and have often brake discs

Re: Good info on Hilux axles

Does anyone have an updated or current weight figure for a 50" atlas potentially in gp4 guise? I'm in a similar predicament where the hilux stuff is easily available locally, but potentially a wasted overkill in terms of excess weight. If the atlas is somewhat lighter I'll go the hard yards to procure one of them instead. The end goal will to be have either one running as a FF.

Re: Good info on Hilux axles

In Australia the hill will be much more easily obtained. Both diff and parts for.
If money is no object I'm sure you could source everything easily, with UK shops etc helping here.
Also depends on how much power you will be running? Many cars running the hill diff as you would know. But I agree with wanting to keep the weight down (I'm in the same boat). So just depends on how much strength your going to need.

Re: Good info on Hilux axles

I'll try to measure mine this evening. It's complete, pig head installed, LSD and gear set, with shafts turned down to accept Ford wheels. No disc, no calipers, no bracket for calipers. So only the pads to fit 3 link and Z bar. So you can compare the axle, not brake set you will be using.

Re: Good info on Hilux axles

Mine is 137,5 cm wide from flange to flange, no disc fitted. It's stock Hilux with 65,5 mm length drive shaft (from bearing to the end, bearing length not included). It's the heavy duty 4 rib pig head, so called V6 pig head with heavy duty pinion bearing.

I do have 2 brakets welded on it but not heavy, in total I measure 67 kg. This is with NO brake disc, calipers or support. LSD and gears installed.

It may be heavier as Ford axle but the tubes are very strong. Last time I saw a Ford tube broken in the rally of Semois. Don't think this can happen so fast with a Hilux axle. The drive shafts are also much stronger. You will not have to replace them, nor do you need stronger bearings on the outside (save you a lot of money). The gears are 8,5 inch if I remember. I've fitted a Yukon HD gear set. Almost any ratio is available and affordable.

If you want to make this axle shorter you need to make it 16 cm shorter, otherwise there is no metal for splines to be machined (just behind the splines they are thinner). Some older axle they told me don't have this issue.

Re: Good info on Hilux axles

A capri atlas axle can break under extreme use, a P100 axle can't because of its thicker tubing (and will still be lighter then a Hilux axle)

Re: Good info on Hilux axles

I opted for the Hilux because the shafts are extreme strong (not only shaft, whole housing) and it's so easy to fit different ratio's. You just have to change the pig head. Also all possible ratio's are direct available and prices are much lower as what you would pay for a Ford gear set.

Re: Good info on Hilux axles

The original LSD from Hilux is not man enough. You can fit Supra with some extra work but lot's of models and makes are available at the same prices as what you would pay for any other diff.
