How to identify if i have a long pinion escort twncam/mexico or capri steering rack??

Bent the housing of what i thought was a long pinion escort rack, didnt think anything of it untill i tried to get one today!! It has crossed my mind i may have a capri rack in the car, but its a quick rack, about 2.1turns lock to lock and ive looked all evening and cant find a quick rack and pinion listed for a capri anywhere! Is there any easy way of telling the difference between the 2 racks that both have long pinion shafts? Or has anyone got any dimentions of between mouting points or length of housing of either of the racks?? Any help would be greatly appreciated and will get the car back on track quicker!!

There's a company in Birmingham called Killey Clinton Engineering that specialise in the manufacturer and recondition of all makes and models of steering racks including competition ones so they should be able to help you out.

I was n't aware that Capri's were ever fitted with the long stem rack. A couple of photos might help us to identify it better.

I always thought a Capri rack was slightly longer than an Escort rack anyway??
Or longer track rod arms at least??

The rack housing is about 51cm long
The rack itself about 67cm with no trackrods bolted on.
The longest distance between mounting backets 35 cm
And the pinion shaft oout of the housing is about 21 cm

Well the good news is that's a long stem pinion on your steering rack. These racks were usually fitted to Mex, TC and RS 1600's to clear the starter motor. What's bent the tube or the rack?

The company in Brum should be able to sort it out for you, I don't think it would break the Bank.

The rack and tube is bent, i did straighten it a bit so cant tell in the pics. Im still thinking its a capri rack from pics ive seen of them, especially the splines on the pinion and angle of pinion. Im trying to find one so i can compare them next to each other.

Spoke to kiley clinton today. They think its a capri rack rather than escort from my discription to them. Its a burman rack though which they dont do a quick rack and pinion for. They can however sell me a complete 2.4 turns cam gears rack just gonna cost 265 though! Thats without an exchange rack though. Hopefully know for sure tomorrow once weve exchanged a few emails. Still doesnt explain why it feels its currently about 2.1 turns lock to lock though!!

There's a second hand long stem std Burman Mk1 Capri rack on flee bay for £80, however it won't be a high ratio one.

Back in the day most high ratio racks were indeed 2.4 turns or 2.5 lock to lock, however there were the occasional 2.2 ones about which I once had on a car.

All sorted now, was in fact a capri, cam gear rack, and kiley clinton doing me a complete new one!
