    St170 engine rebuild.

Hi all after some advise. Just bought low mileage st170 engine. Unknown history. Thinking of either strip it and check bores and rering it. Or bore it out to 86.5mm to make 2.1. Ideas or advise please.

If it were mine I would strip the unit and check the wear - then make the call on which direction to go.

ive got one here i stripped for someone supposedly low mileage it was mint inside. i would suggest doing a compression test, if all is well leave it alone and spend the cash on bolt on bits which will actually make the most of it

I quite agree, no need in making yourself work and spending money if there's no need to, these engines are as tough as old Boots. I would certainly avoid going the big overbore route only to gain next to nothing in terms of bhp. The heads where the power comes from.

i have one coming my way soon that i will be selling if you find you need another or a spare and i agree with above, strip and check then either reassemble or buy another ! they will hit close to 200 bhp standard if mapped correctly.

Thanks for info. But I'm struggling to find any st170 engine specs, stuff I can use when stripping to measure / compare up against,
    E.g., compression test figures
    Piston ring gaps
    Torque wrench settings,
    anything engine related
    Any help peeps

i would split the bearings and if they look ok chuck it in and take a chance you will still need torque settings tho.

Couldn’t agree more with the above....

They’re a cracking engine and wear very little! See links below for your torque settings and bearing measurements

I think those Boggs Brothers inlet manifolds are why some bike carbs work well on cars - the tract length is about 3 times longer than on a bike - long inlets = torque............just an observation. Very Italian colour mix lol!

Looking good mate, what manifold are you going for?

I fancy a nice stainless one but can’t justify the cost at ye minute, my motor has just made a healthy 240 horse with a Ashley one
