    pinto turbo fuel problem

hi guys, after many weeks playing with the fueling problem i have now ditched the rs carb and fitted a renault 5gt turbo solex, it now runs a dream with no spluttering and no longer running rich, the problem i have now is in 3rd and 4th gear at the higher rev range it seems to starve of fuel, im using a new facet fuel pump and only running 10 psi of boost at the moment, does anyone know what psi of fuel presure the solex can handle as i have a xr3i pump wich produses 40 psi and when i fitted with the rs carb it blew the reg valve and the carb to bits and i dont want to do the same again, or do you lads think its not fuel presure thats the problem, maybe re jetting or something completley different, all ideas welcome, cheeRS Edd.

I think thats your problem your running out of fuel pressure when making full boost. You need a pressure reg that senses boost and so it will add on whatever the boost is you are making to the fuel pressure. For example at idle you need 2-4psi like any other carb engine. When making 10psi boost you need 12-14psi of fuel to ensure that you still get the 2-4psi the carb needs otherwise the boost overcomes the fuel and back pressurises the fuel jets (think thats it, makes sense in my head!).

I would be starting with a pump from a metro turbo/r5 to make sure that i had a suitable pump for a carb engine thats turbo'd

Ps dont drive it again unti you sort the pump as you run the risk of running seriously lean and melting the internals!!!

    Re: pinto turbo fuel problem

The fuel pressure regulator off an r5 turbo works off the boost pressure, mine ran 1.5bar boost with the normal regulator

Thats the specs off a R5 turbo setup stolen from http://membres.lycos.fr/r5gt/gtt/tech.htm
    • Electric fuel pump:
      • Flow: 60 l/h.
      • Pressure: 2.5 bar (36.25 psi).
    • Fuel pressure regulator:
      • Minimum idling pressure: 275 mbar (3.98 psi).
    • Solex 32 DIS 931 sealed carburettor:
      • Main jet: 120
      • Idling jet: 46
      • Accelerator pump jet: 40
      • Idling speed: 650 ± 50 rpm.
      • CO rate: 1.5 ± 0.5.
