    creating a fuel return

I'm in the process of building a pinto turbo on a budget. I'm using a r5 carb instead of injection and I believe the carb itself doesn't have a fuel return. The fuel pressure regulator (also R5) will return the fuel to the tank.

This all will be going in a capri III that was origional a carbed pinto. So I assume there is no fuel return on the tank. Buying a 2.8 injection tanks are rare here and cost a lot. So I need something else.

I do not fancy drilling and welding a fuel tank, I'm allways lucky and will end up with a big bang.

Now was I reading on turbo mini that this owner had put a T piece in between the tank and the pump. Like this

I know this is a bit of a bodge but if it works thats fine for me.

And can I use the standard fuel line that is in the capri or do I need to plumb in two new lines instead of just a retour.

Yeah give it a try I think that will be fine for what you are doing, if it was injection then thats a total different story.

why is there a difference between injection and carb, both use a high pressure fuel pump (3 bar)

    can you please explain

I don't know about R5 carbs, but normally a carb needs 3 psi, not 3 bar. 3 bar is roughly 45 psi.

The r5 gtt is a carbed turbo engine a bit like the metro turbo setup. I see now I forgot to add that the parts are off a turbo car

Yeah more like 3 to 6 psi for carbs, so that return should be fine for you setup.
    Injection runs around 3 bar.

    Re: creating a fuel return

You will need to run a high pressure pump though as the regulator will be set up for your normal carb pressure around 3psi but will also add in the boost pressure via the inlet pipe and add that to the fuel pressure so that the fuelling stays as it should.

Also i would be adding a return to the sender as per the mk2 escorts, all you need do is take it out the tank and drill a hole in it and braze/bolt in a suitable pipe/fitting and refit to the tank and then run the return line down the car

2.8 Capri tanks have a built in swirl pot, don't forget to factor that into deciding if they are too expensive.

    Re: creating a fuel return

If it was a 2.0 capri it would it not have 2 pipes in the fuel send unit, feed and a return already ? the VV didn't have a return but the TC webber did

    Re: creating a fuel return

@dangerousdave I have indeed a high pressure pump that is going to feed the regulator. So I can take the sender unit out and just drill a hole in that and solder a pipe to it? does the pipe need to be in a special place or just sticking out enough.

@dave I'm living in the Netherlands and for some reason everthing that a few years old turns to gold here. and the 2.8i is a bit of an collectors item here.

@bortaf from origin it is a 1600 capri so the sender unit has no return.

The only question left is, is the carb fuel line wide enough for 3 bar fuel pressure to the regulator or will the restriction stress the fuel pump.

    Re: creating a fuel return

i've converted loads of sender units to take a return, just remove it fromthe tank and simply drill a hole in it and braize or solder in a short tube

    Re: creating a fuel return

Yesterday I found the time to take some skin of my hands and take the fuel sender out.

so this is what I got

can I just drill a hole (inside out)? I think I will hit the smaller stud. Can I reallocate that stud? I think it is some kind of earth for the tank.

The plan is to put this in it as return. The smallest part is as wide as the fuel supply. I will hard solder it inside and outside to minimize the change of leaking

Also had a bit of a blond moment. the tank is still underneath the car and there is fuel in it. Put it on a axle stand and removed the unit. Cleaned the tank and put some gaffertape on it to stop the fuel fumes. Lowered the car to find out fuel pooring out. Dohh. So had to roll it into the garage guick and squize myself between wall and car to jack it up again to stop it leaking.
