    Windscreen wiper wiring

I am rewiring my mk1 escort, and the windscreen wiper unit(2 speed including foot pedal) is the only thing left, I am not changing how it works or changing the switch, just rewiring it so i can get rid of the old loom, can someone explain it to me? something like a flow chart or legible diagram unlike the standard escort diagram

    Thanks

    Re: Windscreen wiper wiring

I rewired mine with relays to take the load away from the standard switch.

It is a bit of a bugger to get your head around, so I drew a few diagrams. Unfortunately they are of the 'back of a fag packet' variety and are currently down at my workshop, so I'll try to remember to bring them home for scanning tomorrow

    Re: Windscreen wiper wiring

Sorry for the delay. I re-drew them as the original fag packet design wasn't all that legible

It's probably best if you print them out to make best sense of them.

A point to note on the 2nd diagram.
All the relays are shown in their rest positions. Ignore the positioning of the relay coils, they should actually be on the other side of the switch contacts.

I've done the heater blower system as well, if you'd like a scan of that one let me know. It is relatively easy to work out though IMO

Hope it is of some use, any questions just ask

I knew you were going to ask me that

Are you talking about on the standard wiring, or my revised scheme?

    Re: Windscreen wiper wiring

I'm sure the wiring diagram including the foot pedal switch is in one of the Haynes manuals I have down at the workshop, but I won't be able to get down there for a few days. I did a search online and couldn't find anything.

As for how I've wired it in in my new scheme, I haven't a clue! It was all done on the fly and like a pillock I didn't document any of it
Mine is wired so that it operates an electric pump for the screenwash as well as the wipers - I have dispended with the rubber 'bulb'.

I'll try to get you the original schematic at least this week, I'll have to see if I can remember how I've wired mine in the meantime.

    Re: Windscreen wiper wiring

ive had a look in my haynes manual and i cant for the life of me see the foot switch, nor how it physically hooks into my look, it used to work perfectly fine, but i cant see how to put it back together

I've got a MK1 RS2000 in the workshop at the moment, and it has the foot pedal fitted, so I'll be able to tell you what fits where when I go down there on Wednesday afternoon

    Re: Windscreen wiper wiring

    Right sorry about the delay

I'm almost sure I had a diagram showing how the foot switch is wired, but I'm buggered if I can find it

Anyway I had a look at the wiring in the RS2K and it's connected as follows:

    Foot switch wire......................connects to
Brown....................................Wiper motor connector with single brown wire
Brown / white..........................Wiper motor connector with two brown wires
    Blue.......................................Blue plug on wiper switch

All that is applicable only to the two speed wiper motor as far as I can remember.

    Hope that helps.

    Re: Windscreen wiper wiring

    hi,

here's the relevant bits from the original wiring diagram for a post '69. if yours hasn't got these colours i'll see if i can find the same for an early one.

connecting up the foot switch is like exboyracer says.

    54-3.1 bk/p & 54-3.3 are Black/Purple ignition switched feeds to wiper motor.
31b1 br is a Brown self-park from the switch.
31-12.1 br is a Brown earth.
    31-23 br/y is a Brown/Yellow earth.
    31-12.3 is a Brown earth.
53g is a Green low speed to the switch.
F1 53b r is a Red high speed to the switch.

pretty much the same colours at the switch but there are single speed & two speed switches shown here. 66 is the single speed one, 68 is the two speed.

    easy ain't it?

    Re: Windscreen wiper wiring

Could do with help with same problem.....

I am part way there - so far I have:

    Black/ purple trace - power
Brown (x2) - no resistence between them & earth thru multi-meter so I think these go to earth
    Green
Brown - pulses when wiper runs so assume is to do with Park

So - I have connected power to the black/ purple, earth to the two browns which I think are earth and earth the green thru an on/off/on switch - this makes the wipers run! :-) When I remove the earth to the green it stops the wiper but does not park.

    A) I'm not sure if this is right!!
    B) what do I connect to what to get them to park?

    Hi,

I'm using an aftermarket toggle switch - on/off/on. Switch is metal & three connectors.

You'll struggle to make the system work with a three position switch. The factory switch has a connection through it even when off to allow for the park function.

I have seen that folks have struggled with it however I know it's possible as teh same switch worked on the original loom. I've changed the loom so this could be a slightly different config.

I'm sure you can use a changeover relay to send a signal to the park circuit. Should allow you to use a toggle switch. I'm about to try it I'll let you know if it works. May be a week or so.

Thanks for for posting this up. I've been wondering for ages how you upgraded the wiper and heater system. In fact all of the loom.

could you post up the heater diagram at some point please.

great website showing the resto of the mk1
