    Carb refubishment

Been thinking of gettting my dellorto 45's refurbished. They do still work but are oxideised and the bolts are all looking a bit rusty. I'd like to have them looking like new again with new seals etc as the engine will all be painted up like new.

Where abouts could i have this done and how much roughly would i expect to pay?

I'd also want to get my own carbs back and not just an exchange set.

if you don't mind getting gloved up buy yourself a few cans of carb cleaner aerosol and a toothbrush to get the bodies cleaned up - it gets all the old petrol varnish and corrosion off a treat.

as for the screws you could get all new ones from www.dellorto.co.uk, but that's a bit pricey. if you've got a fixings company anywhere nearby go to them and match up the thread size and length for general stuff, all the adjuster ones come with a rebuild kit

    OR

if you look somewhere down in the For Sale i've got a brand new pair on there. make me a sensible offer and they're yours - just transfer all yours jets. etc.

Thanks, i may end up having to do that but don't know if i'd be able to get the finish i wanted at home.

Seen these done with soda blast and they look really good, just what i'm after but these are done by a guy in the states. Surely someone must do something similar here, even just the soda blasting and i would rebuild them myself?

These guys do Soda blasting , their blurb says they cover the whole of Scotland.

You'd have to be very careful with Carbs though, and I'd only do the outside so you'd need to be sure that the internals were well protected.

Cheers for the link, i might get one of the small blasting pots and have a go myself on a few old parts, the one at work would probably dissintegrate a carb in seconds. Maybe best to do a carb while it's still assembled then pull it apart for refurbishment.

Are carbs not best cleaned in sonic baths or whatever they are called rather than with abrasives?
Carb cleaner is incredibly good stuff by the way. I get mine from the local pound shop. Not sure of the price though.

Cheers for the link, didn't realise you could just use normal baking soda, great stuff!

I tried spray carb cleaner on my xr2 carb, it came in a light green tin. Seemed to work as a good degreaser but it still left the carb disscoloured.

Think the ones of my pinto are past that stage as they are pretty oxidised, surprisingly they do actually work.

Baking soda is in stock (in the smallest pot ever seen, not like the kilo or more box in that guide ), will be giving it a shot on my thermostat housing im fitting soon so its a non vital part to test the cleaning ability as its pretty manky and also how easy it is to remove the stuff in the hard to reach bits!

Have you tried this yet? Had a look at the air cooled tech budget setup, looks like he didn't even dismantle it fully and still came up a treat!

    Re: Carb refubishment

I tested it out with my schultz gun and it seemed to work, not as well as in the pics but i think the gun has too big a diameter tip and feed pipe!? So was thinking of copying what he made in the link and having another bash, but it certainly looks like it will work, its proper messy though so i made a blast cabinet from a bin bag, also meaning i can reuse the soda as i only got a tiny pot!

Good stuff. i've got a blast cabinet i've used once, so reckon I might empty out the alu oxide see if that works. looks like a blow gun he's used.

This place looks reasonable for a better sized supply!!

    after soda blasting

Not perfect but ran out of time tonight.
For info I've used a clarke blast cabinet, and aldi compressor, so not an expensive set up. One problem I've had is that the soda is a bit lumpy, maybe should have broken up the lumps first. Woud also recommend chucking a couple of silica gel sachets in the bottom to keep the media dry as it is prone to clumping at the hint of moisture.

That looks excellent, i've got loads of parts stacked up that need this now. Hopefully it works just as well on throttle bodies and alternators.
