Brake disks which can be used On Mk1/2 Escorts etc

Thought i would spend some time having a look what could be used....some have been used on escorts already, some have not.

Ford use a 68mm mounting hole, so any disk with a hole thats same or smaller can be used after machining.

    Bold= close to ideal offset.
Remember disk thickness ranges from 20mm to 28mm, most 256 to 280mm disks are 20 to 22mm
    283 and higher 25 to 28mm

Chime in if you have used any of there disk on an Escort or similar.

Regards offset, I found anything worked from 27mm to 35mm on disk around 266 or smaller, over 35mm offset may have the disk touching the strut although this does depend on the size of the disk.

brilliant post Tony, would the disk not touch the TCA over 32mm or is it pretty safe up to 34mm?

They used to hit the strut on the sunbeams, E30 disks were a problem but a grinder used to cure it

I wanted to show what could be possibly used, I know what I have already used but things have moved on a great deal since i was active.

Look at the AUDI A3/TT disks 312mm only 2mm more offset than the ford default disk...maybe a nice cheap way to force 17inch rims LOL

Or you could machine the tt/a3 disks outer diameter down a touch and have moster brakes in 15's, 300mm should go i would think?

My 260mm wilwood midilite m16 replacement disks touch one of my tre's and is very close to the other, id imagine it will hit the tre before the tca? Its easily sorted with some washers on the steering arm where it bolts on though so i guess the tca would be the next closest thing?

    Hi All

My disc conversion using the Pug / Citroen 283 x 22mm rotor redrilled to suit the Escort hub. Alloy adapters to mount and offset RX7 4 pots.

This could be used with many combinations of calliper that can be adapted to the original strut as it allow plenty of clearance to the TRE etc and does not effect track

sorry being a bit thick, I meant TRE's not TCA's
Like that Mazda caliper, what model is it off and is it alloy or iron?

They off the FD (1999 - 02) model RX7 although the earlier FC's (1986 - 91) are identicle although they have a finned body. The 36mm bores are a little smaller than ideal but should work OK with a 0.625 master in the bias peddle box.

The wider mounting points than the similar Nissan item fitted to the Skylines etc makes it easier to adapt to the original struts.

They fit inside 14" steel rims but require 15" alloy items.

Awesome....so we know the 27+mm heights work fine, the BX16V disks I used to use on sunbeams were similar.

I really should do a revised disk list now showing disk heights and cut out anything 36mm or higher out as they may cause issues.

Anyone here got an old Avenger/sunbeam hub and can measure what size hole the disk needs to mount on it? I have lost my notes unfortunately.

does the disk come real close to the strut? if yes it may be a BMW E30 disk 260mm 35mm total height

im thinking they will probably be Reno 21 265mm disks machined down to 260mm as they have near enough the exact same offset as a ford capri disk.

Maybe, i just cant remember if the outside looked machined or not, pretty sure the webs sit down a fair bit like a normal unmolested disk so who knows! The tape measure will tell all!

Dave I have a set of brand new Rally Design 260mm the measurements are (as accurate as I was able to measure):
1: Hub hole (disc centre) 68mm
    2: mounting bolt PCD 92mm
    3: disc thickness 21mm
    4: mounting face thickness 8mm
5: total disc height (hub face to disc front face) 32mm

Tony, they would be, but I already have a set of Cossie RWD calipers, so I think the discs will have to be smaller.

    2: mounting bolt PCD 92mm
    3: disc thickness 21mm
    4: mounting face thickness 8mm
5: total disc height (hub face to disc front face) 32mm

Tony, they would be, but I already have a set of Cossie RWD calipers, so I think the discs will have to be smaller.
they have to be reno21 blanks machined down to 260mm for that, I have found nothing else that comes close. They look to be as near as you can to grp4 copies as you will get, i remember Talbot had the same disks for the Sunbeam Lotus grp4 which used the same grp4 caliper as Ford did.

Regarding disk thickness, 280+ 22mm disks would be right on the limit for me, i would prefer to be on 25mm disks being honest and 28mm disks over 300 if using standard disks in anger.

well, just been given a set of brembo 295x25mm discs here in Dubai, can get the bells made up locally for about £50, so just need to split the cossie calipers, insert 3mm bugger spacers and make up some brackets. At least that is todays plan

Managed to get under the car the other day, the outer diameter of the disks is unmachined, they are stamped on that edge:

    DBW08 CV103 MIN TH 20.4MM V46 MADE EC 17

Hopefully it will be of some use, they are for 4 stud hubs. If i ever have to take them off i will measure them properly

They sound like repo grp4 repo disks, I used to have sunbeam ones very similar.

If you get a chance with disk off the hub, take a few pics.

Great info.....not sure how many of those makes we get over here though

So would you be suggesting using the calipers from the same vehicle for each of the disk options you have listed or would a total mix and match approach be possible/better?

Also, how does this approach compare to buying the likes of AP/Wilwood etc big brake kits? Better/worse stopping power? Higher/lower cost?

    Mk1_Oz

Basically you should use a disc width similar to the original one used with that calliper. Secondly the pad wipe needs to be compared to the rotor to ensure it does not overhang the inner or outer edge of the rotor. This can occur if the rotor is substantially larger in diameter than the original and the calliper is unable to be positioned at the correct radius - or if the pad is substantially larger than original. Using a similar sized rotor to the original item also ensures the pad profile is suited to the rotor and assists in braking and cooling efficiency.

Almost any calliper and rotor combination can be used providing they are suited to each other and the application.

This is my setup on my turbo technics capri. The mazda rx7 calipers on 300mm bmw discs. I should have gone 283 mm as 15 inch alloys wont go over them.

Did a trackday with them recently and they were really good, plus I used the standard 2.8 master cylinder and the peddle was great.

    Hi Rich.

A few here in Oz have used a similar set-up with the BMW rotors. My main problem was the 10mm increase in track each side when placed over the top of the machine original hub.

I then chose to go with the Pug rotors above with a suitable adapter - which you have the details The adapters also have the relief for the Capri strut steering arm.

Much appreciated with the details. I will get a set made up soon. What was the height of the disc you used was it 27 or 34mm? I assume it was 22mm thick.

    283mm x 22mm rotor and 27mm height overall

And yes, the calliper is mounted on the wrong strut (as the bleed at the bottom)

    Hi,

Very interesting post regarding "other makers discs" Can I ask, the discs that you have listed with similar off sets, are you suggesting that these discs could be bolted the rear of the standard hub (as the factory escort mk1/2 disc dose) or in the case of the Capri Sport "big disc upgared" using Fiat Brembo and a 300-315mm discs? their converstion fits directly over the face (wheel side) of the hub and needs a bracket to centre the caliper back into a suitable postion? I noticed that you didnt list any discs around the 315mm x 28mm size? do you know of any dics this size that would fit over the face of the escort hub as in the Capri Sport conversion? I cant seem to find what dics they are using? They wont tell me either!!!!

    Cheers

Just to give credit to this thread, I used the 305mm rotors from the PEUGEOT 406 3.0L Coupe 97-2004

I mounted them with Brembo calipers from an Alfa 166. Had some mounts made up and all works great and fits under 15" rims.... Just

Props to the OP for the help

    Here's a few pics

    Cheers

    Matt
