    St170 best options

Hello guys and girls It's been a long time since I been on here and the car has been in storage for a long time now and as I'm ready to set the mind back on the car I thought I'd give her a new lease of life and pull the pinto engine out and stick an st170 engine in which I picked up Sunday from a nice chap in Burton on Trent So I've had a few reads through the conversion posts And still can't decide where to start and which way to go I'm not looking for maximum fast and furious just something that will get up and go I'm thinking bike throttle bodies whilst leaving the standard st manifold and standard injectors Not sure what ecu as yet nor what gearbox to use at the moment I still have the type 9 that had no issues Also not sure what mounts to use I have a world cup xmember but I've also fitted a bulkhead strengtheningkit when I built the car so I'm slightly worried about the space to fit a water rail Anyone like to put my mind in the right direction?

Not that I have an escort, but if you have the type 9 I'd just go with that, otherwise it's a mazda box. I've gone Jenvey's, DanST manifold and Emerald ECU and it's good, although I do love the look of the AT direct to head ones but a fair bit dearer, other than that plan is to have some headwork done and that's about as cheap and making the most out of it as you can get

Here’s a - how to run ST170 on Oem ecu if that interests you and the inlet manifold etc will fit ok.

For TB’s you will need an aftermarket ecu that can run the vct valve, ME221 can run full control and I think the latest emerald can otherwise it is dta s60 or omex 710. Or run omex600 and add the ME vct controller.

if you do your own mounts you can position so that water rail is ok ? its no issue to ease it all forward a touch and raising the gb tail helps a LOT..
induction wise i personally would not go the plastic manifold route- its a bit of a bodge imho although bike bodies do work well enough - mine ran fine on a fabricated manifold.
cheapest route is carbs and an ignition module but you still need a vvc controller.
theres no cheap route as so many parts needed, sump- exhaust- alt kit etc but it can do 190 bhp if given a chance ..............

    Re: St170 best options

If you go bike tb’s then you will need an aftermarket ecu (ME221 runs at around £750 including loom and does full vct control) you can use the st170 plastic inner inlet manifold part but the tb’s will probably need respacing (kits about for gsxr ones) or go for an ally one from bogg bros or danst.

Also the throttle cable quadrant on bike tbs is smaller than on a car so you get a lot less throttle pedal travel from zero to full throttle (make it very twitchy, not smooth to accel) so either change the quadrant or the pivot position on the pedal. If using the st170 plastic inlet manifold you can use the st170 injectors but need to block the tb ports, if going ally then you will need a new fuel rail and injectors for the tb’s.

Finally, if you are deleting the ac and ps pumps then you need to fix the water pump as it will be running the wrong way, again the are fixes either with new pump impeller or using an idler on the belt.

As you may have guessed it is not as easy as just putting on the bike tb’s and driving away. Also allow for a rolling road session to set it all up unless you want to do on-road tuning fir which you will need a wide sand lambda kit (innovate lc2 possibly).

Hope this helps scope out the project.

Wow definitely going to be a headache lol
When I first built the car my head was purely in the zone then things changed in life (for the better)
And I just can't get the mind set again
Thinking I'll be reading the forums for a while to get the head in the game
I no there threads going through stuff about the conversion but a list of everything start to finish needed would be cool

a throttle body is a throttle body, whether bike or car the responsiveness has little if anything to do with the body itself, the main reason bikes respond well to throttle is the engine internals way naff all

    Well aware of that graham
I do apologise I was mainly referring to throttle bodies in general and the fact that I can get bike ones very cheap
I was surprised yesterday at how many people are actually using bike carbs and throttle bodies whist down at the classic Ford show at the pod
I'm going to drag the car out of storage and get the pinto running again whilst collecting the bits
    Cheers for the info guys

Tbs or twin 48s, head work, good map, you'll easily cross200bhp with stock bottom end
