    Master cylinder confusion

    Hi all,

Where can you get a new girling type dual (servo) master cylinder for a mk2 with 3 outlets? eBay seems to have lots of ‘rs2000’ ones but not a 1600 one.

Can anyone help me find a new one, mine has two outlets at the front and one at the back, how ever if you look at this sold link which is the only picture I can find that is the same as mine anywhere on the internet, it says it’s for a non servo car..... does that mean I have the wrong type?

    https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F263695144634

the reason I need one as I have just been refused an mot for 0% brakes on the rear, I am over hauling the whole braking system now.

    Thanks
    kris

zero effort on rear brakes is rare, does the pedal feel ok? if so it might be the rear flex hose is blocked or both rear wheel cylinders are siezed

    Re: Master cylinder confusion

I have just replaced the cylinders, shoes and hand brake cable, as well as lubricating all bits that needed doing. It all came about after I rebuilt the front calipers as one had seized, then I bled it all through and the brake pedal didn’t do anything until it got nearly all the way down then on a test drive the brakes were crap. On mot the rears showed nothing. I am wondering if the rears are bled properly? I have been researching and some people say it can take 2 litres to do the whole system properly. Now that I have changed the parts on the back end I wanted to just change the master cylinder and then bleed it all through again.

    Thanks
    Kris

I have now ordered new flexible brake lines for the front and rear as you have mentioned a good point that it could be blocked. I will re do all the corroded lines too, I mean I haven’t had the car that long any way and it lots needs of parts renewing so I may as well do all the brake bits now.

Does the handbrake function? That'll show if the shoes / drums are working. Old / corroded rigid lines could have mechanical damage - internal blockage / crushed pipe but you would have noticed lack of fluid on rear bleeding?

    Re: Master cylinder confusion

I have replaced the rubber hoses and copper lines throughout the car, the fluid seemed to bleed a lot easier this time. Took the car for a test drive and She is sweet! Adjusted the handbrake to 3 notches and now she is ready for a re test. Didn’t bother with replacing the master cylinder, the mot man said that’s what it would be, but I wasn’t convinced as it happened after I bled the brakes last time so I reckon Graham was right, must have been a blockage somewhere.

    Thanks

personally I'd use the original route across the back axle... wouldnt want the handbrake to rub through

Not sure you will get away with brake pipes being cable tied in an MOT either. Those pipes look quite messy.

    Re: Master cylinder confusion

I have done the pipes exactly how they were before, the pipes are held in by clips manufactured on the axle and the cable ties are just to help it, they were also in the same places as before. The Clip snapped off the axle in the centre (where the diff is) so I have held it on by the handbrake rod bush. At no point is the pipe able to touch the handbrake cable.

Having never seen the underside of an escort before, I wouldn’t know any different as to where the pipe should mount?

    Thanks
    Kris

as long as the pipes are not flapping in the breeze, they shouldn't concern an mot tester.

with the changes to mot regulations an insecure brake pipe is a minor so it doesnt fail the test, its only a major if its basically hanging off and likely to break or get snagged on something
