    Additional Fuel Tank in MK2 Escort

    Gentlemen;

    I am planning to install an additional fuel tank in the spare wheel well in a MK2 Escort.

    I would appreciate your thoughts on.....

    Best method to couple both tanks; including venting the aux tank.
    What size and type of fuel hose; and routing (inner or outer boot?)
    And of course any other considerations.

    Thanks guys.
    Regards,
    Kevin

    Re: Additional Fuel Tank in MK2 Escort

    My old Mk2 had a std Mk2 Escort tank mounted in the spare wheel well.
    Just made some alloy brackets to mount it (nothing fancy).
    Routed a fuelline from 2nd tank under the car to a T-piece then one fuelline to carb.
    Take std ventingline and route it through a hole to back of car (same as std tank).
    Filling 2nd tank is through the normal fillerhole (inside boot).

    Thanks for that quick reply;

    I will couple tanks under the car; but i was thinking about ONE filler hole; and so have to consider hose sizing between tanks......application is injection, so pump is in the boot.
    I agree on venting solution, dont think i need to couple those.

    If you only have one filler hole you will need a reasonable size of balance line to allow the 2nd tank to fill. Also if you park on a slope after filling the tanks full you could end up with it siphoning out of the filler, I had this on my Mk3 Cooper S many years ago.

    You are being different with twin tanks so why not add a 2nd wing filler - just mirror the stock Offside one. Otherwise you'll need something in the region of 25 - 32mm ID connection so level equalises quickly as you fill from one side. It was easier on my '68 cooper 'S' - just filled one side then rushed to otherside as I only had a 6mm bore link pipe! Other thing is the breather should be able to displace air at same rate fuel as tank is filling.

    if you use injection, pump must be under the tank

    On a non escort which has an AWD system which divides the fuel tank into two halves (like a horse saddle). the factory configuration sees a low pressure pump in the slave side of the tank to transfer fuel to the master where the high pressure pump (in tank) is, when fuel gets low. there is enough of a bridge above he prop shaft when filling to fill both sides. Might be worth a thought rather than relying on passive syphoning.
