Difference between std and group4 hubs

I know this may seem a very basic question, but can anyone tell me the difference between a standard and a group4 wheel hub on a mk1 escort, and how do I tell them apart.

    many thanks in anticipation

If you mean the front hubs, Group 4 ones are alloy and have different studs with a 5/8 shank. They are approx 10mm wider giving an increase in track. There's also an alloy type one that uses the std Ford studs so you don't have Group 4 sleeves in your wheels.

OK thanks for that, so if they are not alloy hubs they take the standard wheels is that correct.

That depends on the studs. You can get alloy hubs to match cast ones with standard studs. If that is what you are looking for. I have alloy hubs on my anglia which are the same as standard escort ones (to match the struts i have) you can also get ones to match capri 2.8i bilstein struts which if i am correct have bigger bearings as well. It depends what you have and want to replace etc.

grp 4 studs use the shank of the stud to locate the wheel, normal studs use the clamping force of the nuts to do that.

Re: Difference between std and group4 hubs

Sorry I should have made my question clear, I have Capri 2.8 front struts with Revolution wheels, I need a spare wheel and all list two types, gp4 and std, I wanted to know what the difference was and which was fitted to my car.
My hubs are steel so I assume I will need a std wheel.

I was service crew mechanic for the RAF rally team back in the 70’s, but obviously I have forgotten most of what I knew then, age and memory clearly do not necessarily compliment each other.

Lol I have revolutions on my anglia.

It would be a fair gamble that you need a standard wheel.

If you have grp 4 studs you would know it. The wheels have an insert to fit over the grp 4 stud. The stud also is very different looking from a normal stud.

Your rally car may not have grp 4 studs. So don’t worry about your mind 😄

I can picture my wheels etc tomorrow if it helps. They are standard.

A Group 4 stud looks like this...

    https://www.motorsport-tools.com/esc...lly-works.html

I think the thread size is M14x1.5, whereas the standard Capri/Escort is M12x1.5 (although I could swear I once saw a 1/2" UNF!). The Group 4 also has the larger diameter shank for the wheel to locate on.

Have a ride up to Biddle and speak to the Squires Bros, they'll be able to sort you out with what you want. They also stock Revolution wheels.

Difference between std and group4 hubs

The revolution wheels slightly funny. As they like a semi grp 4 design by nature of the nuts etc. But as far as I know mine standard. So if your nuts are the same as mine ! ! Standard it is.
