    Lest we forget

The Eleventh Hour of the Eleventh Day of the Eleventh Month

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.
    John McCrae

Nice one been watching a few of the programmes that have been on yesterday channel today and learnt a lot of new things. Like the 863 brits i think it was that died on the last day of ww1....they only fought til 11am and is almost x4 the dead in the whole of the afghan war. Kinda puts things into perspective as the afghan death toll is regarded as shocking

    R.I.P. all you war heroes

    RIP very moving.

Interestingly it said this morning on the TV coverage at the cenataph that the 2 minute silence was created for one event after the 1st world war all them years ago, but has happened every year since and is now known the world over as a mark of respect and to pay tribute.

It's a very emotional thing, and not something I am very good at putting into words.
May they all rest in peace.

    Nice one dave ,,,,,

Me and my family where in London this weekend , and we went to The Tower of London to show my two boys, and we had the guided tour with one of the (Beef eaters), and when it came to the Two minute silence the guy asked us for the respect and many did, but he had his own respect to pay as his pal had been killed last tuesday, he had tears in his eyes as we did this very sad day

    RIP all

    THE FINAL INSPECTION

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

    'Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you ?
Have you always turned the other cheek ?
To My Church have you been true?'

The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
    'No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
    Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
    And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny,
    That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
    And sometimes, God, forgive me,
    I've wept unmanly tears.

    I know I don't deserve a place,
    Among the people here.
    They never wanted me around,
    Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
    It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
    As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

    'Step forward now, you soldier,
    You've borne your burdens well..
    Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell.'

My deepest respects to soldiers past and present who have paid the ultimate sacrifice and also to every single man and woman who has ever worn a uniform for putting others before themselves. All heroes every last one of them.

RESPECT TO ALL THAT HAVE SERVED!
I went outside for the two minutes and was the only one! Disgraceful! People need reminding to pay respects and reflect just for two minutes of their day.

    Re: Lest we forget

I had a moving 2 minutes silence on Sunday and again today, although others around me carried on thier daily business ignorant of it all.

The old I get the more aware of these types of things I become and the more feelings I have for them. Seems a bit too late for me as I would have loved to have taken my Grandad to a remembrance parade/display and chat to him about the war. I only wish I had the understanding of it younger but I spose its one of those things you grow up into. Lots of questions to ask and no-one to ask anymore.

    Re: Lest we forget

I made sure those around me were aware and just asked politely to remain silent, I can't angry with people for not stopping and thinking, I just think there are too many thoughts going through my own mind and anger isn't one of them.
