    Pinto Starter Motor

    Hi Folks

Looking for a wee bit advice. The starter motor on my pinto is standard for a 2L but has always been really slow at turning over, really unreliable and just not powerful enough to turn over my mildly tuned pinto with 45s. It has finally given up the ghost so i need to get a new one and have wanted to get a high torque starter motor for it for a while now.

Can any one shed some light one any of these listed below. Anyone had them, got them in their car now, tried them and didnt work etc

I was about to bite the bullet and order the Edge one that Burton offers although not overly keen on the price, also ive heard the name wasp kicking about as well.

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Pint...45dd%7Ciid%3A1

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281589317727

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Pinto Starter Motor

I would go for one of the 2 ebay items; the expensive one is made from Bosch parts so quality should be A+++.
Have a similar geared starter on my car (LHD) and it never failed.

    Re: Pinto Starter Motor

Cheers mate, yeah i think one of the ebay ones will be the winner.

There both 1.4kw, but the cheaper one seems bigger like the standard one. I had to remove the engine mount to get the starter off so wondered if the bosch one looked a little more compact. Mind you, once the starters on, im hoping i dont have to look at it again for a long time!

    Re: Pinto Starter Motor

The original Bosch item I have is alot smaller than the std starter.
I can get it off easily without removing the (World Cup) engine mount.

I think that'll be an original RS2000 starter motor, I bought one back in the early 90's. It's definitely shorter than every other pinto starter I ever came across.

    Re: Pinto Starter Motor

The smaller Bosch ones off a Sierra 2.0 IS should be a geared starter motor and these are the ones to fit if they are still available.
Geared starter motors were n't around when the genuine RS 2000 was made in the late 70's.

I vaguely remember that being said somewhere too.
I know my starter is quite small though, an it was definitely bought as an RS2000 starter.

You mean rubber bushed to the bellhousing? I seem to remember mine was bought as a mk2 RS2000, but it's not rubber bushed to the bellhousing if thats what you meant. I did say to the guy will it fit as it's for a mk1 an not a mk2, an he said there's no difference.

Dave, i run a golf tdi battery and Edge starter, spins over great with 11:1 compression and 14deg igntion advance, i think i might have a spare high torque motor in the garage if you need one.

I ended up sticking a diesel battery in my one along with a high amp alternator so knew we'd eventually need to replace the starter. If you've got one kicking about, it might be worth a shot. Is there anything wrong with it? do you know if its more compact than the original?

    Cheers bud

    Re: Pinto Starter Motor

Its about 2/3 the size of a std one, you an also rotate them via the flange so the solenoid can be position anywhere, its almost new. like this :

    Re: Pinto Starter Motor

Ive seen an old thread of someone saying the gears sheered of their edge one so had to send it back, so had kind of discounted them!

can i ask why you replaced it mate? Just wary of not having any comeback on something thats cost a fair bit of dosh, would you take £100 for it?

I think theres only issues if they dont mesh properly with the starter ring gear, but thats a fitting issue. I never replaced it, its just a spare i carry when i was originally going to rally my escort,. i have 2 of a few things! I think i might actually have 3 but one is knackered, diff make!

Dave, let us know how you get on, looking for the same soon. I had read the same thing about the gear 'chipping' then eventually breaking up. Sort of puts you off, but that may be one bad unit.

    Re: Pinto Starter Motor

Someone I know had a MK1 Escort RS 2000 Rally car. The engine was fitted with a geared starter, not a Bosch one I might had. When the engine turned over the starter made an awful sound like the pinion either was n't meshing correctly or the tooth pitch was wrong. The car did so little use that the starter never actually failed but that does n't mean it was right.

I went for the Bosch one mate, so I've not gone for the edge starter, I'll let you know how I get on with the Bosch one though! Could of had one from erikmex but by impatience got the better of me

    Re: Pinto Starter Motor

Timely thread as I have started looking to purchase a spare starter to put in the spares box - fed up with mechanical withdrawals from events so just covering off on a possible starter failure.

    This is my current one which I have no idea what it is other than I was told it is a high torque starter;

Dimensions are shown. I can remove this without removing the WCX member so I guess it is the shorter version (maybe the same as the more expensive one in the ebay link above?). It is 10 tooth. My flywheel is 135 tooth (if I can count.....).

The more expensive Bosch one above appears to be the favourite for me but it is exy just to put in a spares box. Are there other options worth considering (especially in shorter versions that do not involve removing the x member in a carpark, in the dark, late at night before the next day's stages)?

That's Bosch geared reduction starter of a Transit with a Pinto, rated at 1.4 kW (exactly what you need).

Cheers - is that a standard Transit item or modified? Best source for a replacement?

That's a std Ford/Bosch item for the Transit.
I would search on ebay for a similar item.

Ive just fitted this to the car and it works a treat!

This is the one i used

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/372348234...m=372348234581

Turns over really quickly and kicks into life without a bother at all!

Also, its not much smaller than the original but ill be able to get it off again (if need be) without taking the engine mount off!

to be honest, if i was more patient i could of had an Edge starter a bit cheaper but i cant knock the price too much as the car now starts without a hassle
