Early Escort Shell long 4 link axle measurements

Atlas axle is now in place on the 4 links after a lot of searching and head scratching there is now a few questions. I have read that the measurement from the forward leaf spring hole to the front of the axle should be about 446mm, the rear turret should be positioned 32" from the door jam, having plumbed everything up to 32" centre I get a measurement from spring shackle hole to face of axle casing of 465 passenger side and 470 drivers side. The confusion is that the centre of the bump stop reinforcing both sides is about 1.5" further forward. so the million dollar question is what measurements do I use to put the turret in and centre the axle???

right so I know I maybe thinking out loud but the top of the turret centre hole will be about 1,25" from the existing bulkhead bendline

I know this might sound stupid but double check that ur rose joints are extended the same length on all 4 link bars, as it will through you off from one side to the other.
Sorry I can't help you with escort, done the same conversion in my manta rally car an lets just say it takes patience

Re: Early Escort Shell long 4 link axle measurements

So after a lot of cutting mounted both turrets into the car, these are clamped to the chassis rail so the lip has been cut back, looking at the diagrams I should have approx 39,5" centres, the chassis rails on my mk1 are at 37" so my car must have shrunk in the wash as to get the 39,5" at the top I would have the turret tops leaning outward rather than inward. So I can only surmise that I should not have cut the lip and mounted the base of the turret to the lip rather than the chassis rail side if anyine can let me know if I have wasted this weekend would be much appreciated

I can't help with measurements, but where the turret meets the floor, the floorpan section should be cut back tight against the chassis rail. This means you are actually cutting the return part of the chassis rail, and also remove the metal bracket that was the bump stop. This then means that you can plug weld the turret to the chassis.

Have a look at the many posts by Retro Motorsport on here on doing exactly this

Hope it goes well, and yes, its a right pain!

Thanks Duffer I have cut back both the boot floor return, the return of the chassis rail and the bumpstop bracket, i have trial fitted the turrets and I am now thinking that I will have to trim back the top of the turrets to allow them to sit flush against the inner rear quarter panel then hopefully just need to weld in the tubs and turrets.
