Escort Mk1 rear leaf spring saddles.

Is there a difference between Mk1 and Mk2 saddle bracket widths?

I am restoring a standard Mk1 1300 GT and have a hit a problem when assembling the back axle and leaf springs. The U-Bolts align with the bump stop bracket and the base/shocker mount plate however the saddle brackets are wider meaning the U-bolts are forced outwards.

As I bought into this as an unfinished project everything has to be taken as unknown as the car was in pieces. Axle is an English version and the leaf springs looks standard. Could these be wider saddle brackets?

    Thanks for any help.

Mk1 springs are 50mm wide and mk2 are 60mm wide. So saddles will have respective width hole spacings.

It sounds like you need Mk 2 Escort bottom U bolt plates and possibly bump stops.

Unless I'm misunderstanding this it sounds to me like he's got Mk2 spring saddle plates an Mk1 bump stops, thus the 2 don't line up.
I'd say he either needs Mk2 bump stops to increase the width of the U bolts a little or Mk1 spring saddle plates to decrease the width a bit.

Indeed if he has got Mk 2 spring saddles then yes he needs the bump stops and bottom plates off a MK 2 to line the U bolts up.

It's a lot of work to remove the axle, cut off the saddles and weld Mk 1 saddles on.

Yea I meant the spring plates really, rather than the saddles which are of course attached the axle.
You wouldn't want to be cutting saddles off the axle.

Thanks for your helpful comments. I've formed the view that the saddle plates are wrong (Mk2) and am now looking for some Mk1's in decent condition with good rubbers if possible to stay standard/original. If there are non around I'll may have to consider Polyurethane.
