    Help with a 2ltr pinto

I have a 2ltr pinto on twin 45’s in a mk1 escort, for no reason it started to run on 3 cylinders and not the same 3. It now has settled to not running on number 3, plug wet (fuel) spark ok, compesion test is about the same on all 4. Above 3,000rpm it appears to clear (but it could be just dragging the duff cylinder along) At first I was convinced it was fuel, but now totally confused, it starts instantly but will not tick over. Any idea as to what it could be?

    any help appreciated

Have you had the carbs stripped, check the choke venturis are in the correct ways as it;s very easy to get one in the wrong position and this can cause these symptoms. It happened to me many moons ago with a set of second hand carbs we bought.

Thanks, but the car was running fine before and I have done nothing to the motor, the only thing I did was remove the front seats and full harness belts! I am totally bemused as to what has caused such a dramatic fault. The car was on a Dyno some time ago and the Weber’s were set up at that point.

    Help with a 2ltr pinto

Blow out the idle circuits and idle jets as the can goo up when stood and it can give lean issues and symptoms like yours.

What ignition system are you running? Wet plug sounds like no ignition to me,

Points? Rotor arm ect check and clean, it’s a simple engine.

It is an electronic distributer (lumenition) I will blow out the carbs, but they look clean inside. What can go wrong with electronic ignition? Could it just effect one cylinder? Thanks for the reply’s

There’s not much to go wrong, does it still have a rotor arm inside the distributor cap? Sometimes these can corrode or become mucky,

I’d check the idle circuits and that your idle screws are set correctly.

If the miss fire goes over say 3000rpm then there’s a good chance it’s related to the idle circuit somwhere.

Thanks for all the replies, stripped the carbs and cleaned out all jets with compressed air, went on to 2 cylinders then to 1 now nothing, will not even fire with easy start!

spark, fuel and compression all OK, just at a totall loss as to why it will not run, I must have missed something obvious but can’t see it - any suggestions?

OK but there is a spark, I suppose I don’t know what is like under load.

I will try new plugs but I don’t have a lot of faith that will be the cure, other than the timing I have checked everything it has now been five days and each day it has got worse, Tuesday it was fine. It has always started straight away with what seemed like instant ignition, now it’s like you have taken the rotor arm out, but there is still a spark at the plugs.

    at my witts end¥¥¥

I have found that plugs can look like they are giving a suitable spark after being wet, but that an engine will not run on them. Chuck new plugs in and they have been good to go.

New set of plugs now fitted, at least it starts now but only runs on 3 & 4 it was only running on number 1 before now not at all for 1 & 2. I am totally confused as to what the problem is, it is swapping cylinders (run/not run) every time I start it, help !

You need to go back to basics, double and treble check everything that you have all ready gone over especially firing order. If we ever encountered the problems that you are having we would ditch the electronic ignition and fit a distributor with a conventional set of points. You would be amazed at what problems it solved. Some electronic ignitions are absolutely pants.

Fitted new plugs, only running on 3&4 now, as 1&2 were not running it looked like no fuel from number one carb, stripped and sure enough the float chamber was empty. Neddle float valve cleaned and reassembled, the engine burst into life running on all four (result) The question remains, why did the engine start to run on three then two and one then nothing and why it changed cylinders, the last one to run was number one. Clearly the problem with the carb accounts for one and two now not running but prior to this the carbs were stripped and blown out and working OK, new plugs will of helped but doesn’t account for changing cylinders, ie firing on one and four then one and two, I remain confused but it is running now so I am happy. (I never had any problems 40 years ago!) thanks for all your help.
