    AN10 With Oil Temp Sensor

    I am after your thoughts. My Pinto dry sump system has an AN10 line from the pump to the block. Previously I have measured the oil temp using a sender in the oil filter housing that is in the boot in the return line. For various reasons I have decided to move the temp sensor before the engine. I therefore bought an AN10 female fitting that has a 1/8" NPT port for the sensor. However, when I screwed the sensor in I have 2 issues;
    1. the sensor tip is too long by a few mm
    2. the sensor tip appears to block too much of the AN10 oilway

    Firstly, I have never ground the tip on one of these sensors so does anybody know how much metal there is in the tip that could be removed?? I don't want to destroy what was an expensive sensor just to trial and error it. The thermistor inside the brass is small but I don't know if it is in the tip or in the guts.

    Secondly, do you think it is blocking the oil flow too much? I think it is and that it will restrict flow and probably cause the pump to 'see' a higher pressure and therefore incorrectly start by-passing. Depending on how much I can grind off the tip and/or sides I may be able to make this work. The other option would be to use an AN12 fitting with an expander one side and a reducer the other but the more fittings there are the more issues you can have.

    Thoughts?

    Sensor is blocking way too much the oilline.
    Don't use a sensor in a pressure line, only where oil is not moving.

    I agree.

    Being a dry sump system, the only place oil is not moving is in the tank and I don't really want to have to weld a new sensor port onto that. The old sensor is in the return line so is measuring the temp of the airated oil so might not be accurate (maybe).

    I'd be shocked if oil was not moving in the tank...and very concerned !

    It should be moving and circulating at a very high rate.

    No way would I be putting that sensor into that fitting, or anything like it.
