    Re: Road Rally 205 GTi

Not a good day on Sunday. Very slippery conditions due to ice but it suited us down to the ground and set a pace that was well within the top 10. Unfortunately problems developed in SS1 which led to a broken gear rod. This was mended in service and out we went for SS2. What we hadn't spotted was the broken rear engine mount. The engine was allowed to swing back and forth and it eventually split one of the pipes going to the oil cooler which caused the engine to lose all its oil. Im hoping I managed to turn it off before it became properly terminal but it'll have to come out to be inspected and see how much damage has happened. The one good thing is that it hasn't seized so there is hope for a swift rebuild and away we go.

Cheers Lyndon. I think that photo sums up the soon to be expiry of the engine.
Less stage events for me next year as I'm having a go at road rallies again. We are doing the Tour of Epynt though and a few other select rounds along the way.
Happy New Year pal and I'll see you soon.

    Re: Road Rally 205 GTi

Not updated here in a while as Ive been busy. Engine was removed and stripped, con rod bearings were knackered, crank was sent to be checked and it turned out it was bent 10mm so that is beyond saving.
On Sunday we went on a road trip and collected another engine which is due to be checked. I've also been to see another engine tonight which is a runner and sounds healthy so negotiations have began.
First rally is 7/8th of Feb so we don't have too much time to get things sorted.

    Re: Road Rally 205 GTi

Little update for the first time in a while.

New engine was fitted but we had very limited testing time. We did the first event of the championship with a few little niggles but all was going well untill just before half way. It was very icy and some places were covered in snow and we hit a section of sheet ice which nearly saw us going off. Saved the car from going off but it cut out and wouldn't re start. I turned out that the main earth lead clamp to the body had lost its connection so there was no earth even though it was all still connected. All sorted now with a new lead and all the little niggles sorted. We've done more testing and now all seems well.

Next event is the Bro Caron on Saturday night where we will be aiming for a strong finish in a full field of 90 entries.

Bro Caron didn't go so well on the weekend.

We set a tidy pace all night in tricky icy conditions whilst trying to get passed cars due to us being seeded poorly.

Ended up hurtin a bank which put us on our roof and that was game over. Need to check the full extent of the damage but it's not looking good so far.

    Re: Road Rally 205 GTi

It's been a while since posting an update here. Basically i started stripping everything to give the car a proper going over. The roof at folded in places and looked like the whole roof itself had twisted. The floor had cracked under the pedals and had also split around the exhaust tunnel. Rear sills were in a terrible state aswell so after nearly 5 years of rallying and a few brushes with the scenery I decided that it'll be quicker to use the new shell I have.

Work has began and hopefully this weekend will see the new shell come into the garage for some bits to be swapped over. The aim is to get it all done for Mini Epynt at the end of May.

Cheers , I did indeed. Damn good little car that is and it continued to impress me all night. Not sure the Pug would have coped with some of them whites.

Just a little update. Had a an hour or so free saturday evening after finishing getting the Proton ready for classic tracks so we finished the engine bay off and fitted the engine and gearbox. Entry has gone in for Nicky Grist stages on the 11th of July so we have a target to work towards.

New shell, aka Puggers , is taking shape now. Engine and box are in and the car is running, all the wiring is pretty much complete and the rad has been remounted with new mounts. We have decided to pull out of the Nicky Grist due to other commitments and not wanting to rush the final stages of finishing the car so it is done properly. Hoping to get it out on the road as soon as possible with the intention of doing the Mewla in August.

    Re: Road Rally 205 GTi

Its taken longer than expected but on Tuesday it left the garage for its MOT. It went through that no problem. Getting it there was the problem. We've had a long list of issues in getting it running right. We had an issue with some pipework on the fuel pump which didn't allow enough pressure in the system when putting it under load which resulted in it cutting out. We had a really annoying electrical issue aswel where it wouldnt provide a spark which we now believe we have cured.

A few small jobs to do and some cosmetic stuff and then we are all set for the Mewla Rally this weekend on Epynt. We're close to the back at car 92 but given all the troubles we have had and my first time back in this car since rolling it in February I will be more than happy to just get around and finish without any problems. Its also Helen' first time on pace notes so the plan is a nice steady run all day and gradually increase the pace as we settle back into it all.

    Re: Road Rally 205 GTi

Well its safe to say that it didn't go to plan on Sunday. I should have known it wasn't going to be our day when the car wouldn't start getting it off the trailer. 10 mins later and it started. Leaving MC1 to head towards the ranges we noticed the alternator wasn't charging at low revs. Quick stop in service on route to SS1 and it then refused to restart again. Bump started it and we were away with a fully charging alternator now.
2 miles into stage 1 and the stabilizing rod on the gear lever came off leaving us with only 3rd 4th and 5th gear for the rest of the stage and the 2 following stages. We managed to get back to service languishing 3rd from last in the results. Boys in service sorted the linkage out and we thought we could now plot a campaign to climb back up the table. That campaign lasted all of half a mile before the throttle mechanism on the throttle body broke and left us with no throttle. I did a quick bodged repair to get us going but it only lasted another mile or so before it came off again and we were then caught by the closing car so we retired and called it a day.

This was without doubt my worst day rallying. We'll address the issues and put the car through a serious testing schedule in an attempt to iron out all the flaws that come with a rebuild and then hopefully we will have a stronger car than ever....we shall see.

Its a cruel sport Arwel. Fair play to you for reshelling the car though. Don't underestimate how much work you have done on the car to get it to Epynt though. Keep going mate.

    Re: Road Rally 205 GTi

Thanks Paul. The main problem was the lack of mileage before the rally. It was put back together as it came from the old car and we expected it to work from the word go but obviously hasn't. We'll iron out the flaws and put it through its paces again. Peter Lloyd Rallying stages could be a good test in October funds allowing.

Today is a big day for us. We have submitted an entry for this years Network Q Wales Rally GB. It's going to be a busy few months making sure the car is 100% upto the challenge but now we have enough time to give it a thorough going over and lots of testing before WRGB in November.
We are currently seeking some sponsorship just to help us on our way so there will be regular updates soo.

    Re: Road Rally 205 GTi

Entry for the Network Q Wales Rally GB has been submitted and accepted so its all systems go now.

It's been a busy last few weeks. The throttle body has now been fixed, turned out one bolt had abandoned ship and another was finger tight so that was a nice easy fix. The alternator has now been changed as the original had stopped charging the battery. Next on the list is to secure the stabilising rod that forms part of the gear linkage. Its started popping off its mount on the subframe for some reason so a drill and a split pin will sort that. Then it ll be time to put some mileage on it and see if its finally going to start behaving itself.

A few little jobs to finish off tonight and then we'll take it for a little run around on Friday evening. We have been seeded at car 18 for this Sundays Petel Lloyd Rallying stages at Pembrey so we'll be hoping that the niggles have been sorted and we can really put the car through its paces then.

    Re: Road Rally 205 GTi

Another rally done and another disappointment. Had a clean run on SS1 but the car felt down on power and suffered severe fuel starvation on one particular long right hander.
SS2 we stopped due to the fuel pump, we got it going again but took a stage maximum
SS3 we were severely down on power and on SS4 we stopped again before getting it going but decided to retire as it wasn't right.

It looks like we have a problem with the fuel pump or the wiring on top of the pump as it either cut out or doesn't supply enough fuel so we need to get this sorted. Unfortunately we dont have the time to sort it and test it before Wales Rally GB so we've decided to change car and use the Proton we've used on the road rallies.

We will get the Pug sorted and then decide what the future hold for it.

    Re: Road Rally 205 GTi

Well, what an adventure Wales Rally GB was. 3 tough days but an amazing experience. Had an eventful first day with SS1 being cancelled then a short blast through Sweet Lamb before a 18 miler in Myherin which we got 14 miles into before losing a wheel. Quality asian metal had cracked and the whole hub assembly came away from the rear arm. A quick trip home to repair it and we were back in Deeside by 1:30am on Saturday to restart at 8am.
Saturday we started the day in 77th overall and 19th in class but the day went without any problem and saw us climb the table.
Sunday was a day of survival with a run through Alwen and then around the Great Orme before a last run through Brenig which was rough as anything. We did lose our back box in there but got to the end of the rally and finished 33rd overall and 7th in class.
I'll get some pics up soon.

Cheers Lyndon, we did our best to have some fun since we didn't have full power. Top photos as usual. We have a run on the Jaffa stages on the 28th of December so will see you there again.

Im not sure yet Jonsey. I advertised it to test the water a little and see if there was any interest. I've had a few questions about it and one person came to see it at the weekend but didnt want pay what I was asking for it so its staying for now but we shall see what happens.

We have been a little busy since we did WRGB. Focus had turned back to Puggers and getting him ready for the Jaffa Stages down in pembrey on the 28th of December. I have advertised the car for sale as part of me feels like I need a new challenge but we'll see if it does get sold. For now though we have got to the bottom of the running issue. We had a leak in the pump so were losing fuel pressure there and also found a small leak off the fuel filter so both these issues are now sorted and it now feels back to its best and is a little animal again. Hoping for a clean run down pembrey and get to the end. It would be nice to push for class honours and aim for a top 10 but we'll see how the day goes.

We've been seeded at car 31 for the WWRS Jaffa stages at Pembrey. We're looking forward to just getting out on the last rally of the year and going to have some fun but a finish and tidy result would be a nice way to see out the year.

We have also started the process of buying a house so it looks like rallying in 2016 will be on a very small scale but I have decided to keep the car and I have a few little changes I'd like to do to it once the garage is built with the new house. This will probably be my last update before Christmas now so I'd like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and hope you are all on Santas nice list

    Re: Road Rally 205 GTi

WWRS Jaffa stages once again didn't go to plan. It seems to be a proper Achilles heel of an event for me as I've never finished it after 4 attempts. We picked up a puncture half a mile into SS1. SS2 started well with good pace and caught and passed a car. Unfortunately the throttle body stuck open which caused us to retire from the rally.
That has now been rectified and the car is now ready to go again. However, with a house in the process of being built our activities for 2016 is going to be severaly reduced so I am debating selling the car as I can't see it being used much if at all this year.
