MK2 Mexico, back on the road!

Hey guys. My '78 Escort Mexico made it back on the road after a 7 year layaway recently. So thought i'd better share a few pictures! I took it off the road with an intermittent electrical fault in 2011, and running a budget 2.1 on 45s.

Since its been off the road its been treated to an all steel 2.3 on 48s (built by Wayne Mitchell Competition Engines) , and a Tran-X straight cut type 9 box. The new engine made 190bhp dead on the rollers, but there is plenty more to come after an initial run in period. Its been a dream of mine to have a 200bhp + N/A engine in this car and it looks like i should be comfortably over that mark when i return to the rolling road, so happy days!

Still a few little bits to address in the near future (tinker with the ride height slightly, and a change of wheels) but am so so happy to be driving the bloody thing again! Even at 190bhp its plenty entertaining, should be even more fun in the near future

Anyway, hope you like the pics. Will be more to come and a few updates through the summer i guess

Very nice Out of interest what did you have done to the bottom end to make it 2.3?

Hey bud. The bottom end is a 202 block, farndon steel 84mm stroke crank (iirc standard crank is 76mm?), farndon g.a steel rods, and 94mm forged pistons (Arias iirc)

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers guys

Lovely car, what cam is it running and what choke size in your 48’s?

HT1e cam. And only running 38mm chokes as was going for low/mid range power over peak numbers.
However, although the tuner says there is 10-15bhp to be had there with current chokes, I'm upping to 40mm as I can afford to lose a bit of driveability as it stands and then hopefully be pushing for nearer 220bhp apparently.
If it doesn't drive so good I'll go back down a size again

Lovely looking car and sounds like a strong motor.
Where do you radiator hoses run to? I can see the top one in the pics, but not the bottom.
Did you buy them pre-formed or were they made to measure?

Sounds a nice engine, I’m running an Ht1e with 40mm chokes in a 2040cc pinto, makes just over 190hp although I’m keen on building a 2.3 for a bit more mid range
