valve seat cutter - whats available

having just stripped a pinto head to give it a little tlc i find that the seats are the worse for wear.
i have a choice of std or big valves but need a seat cutter regardless.
is there an alternative to the good but expensive NEWAY ? and if not will one size cutter do all i need - cu634 1 5/8 ?

    cheers

if your not trying to cut an unleaded insert, cheap seat cutters will work just fine on a pinto. dam just remembers about the cam, totally forgot, even though i spoke to its owner yesterday

    😄. It's an age thing 😄
It's only std older seats in this one. When you say cheap cutter do you have one in mind ? I see ones on ebay from India that have inserts.

i was referring to inserts in the head not the cutter. newway cutter are good but you dont need such quality to cut cast iron.

Yes got that re unleaded inserts
I confused issue by switching subject to Indian cutters which have tungsten inserts. I see other simple one piece cutters in sets but concerned of their ability to cut.

The Sealey kits look similar to the NEWAY ones and are much cheaper. I've not had the two brands side by side (I've got the NEWAY ones) but from the images I've seen they look pretty close.

You can buy the best seat cutters in the world but if the valve guides are worn it doesn't give you an accurate cut particularly if you cut a seat, remove the pilot to check your work/seat, and then need to cut the seat further as you will get re-alignment issues.

Agreed tho I am more concerned they are of a quality to be able to cut at the mo. Sealed 500+ a set.
I can get a single neway for about 130 inc shipping. But then there's the extras.

tbh, pinto heads are quite soft, you could nearly cut the seats with a blunt spoon! id be surprised if whatever you buy wont do it.

If they are Tungsten Carbide cutters (serrated for 45 degree cuts) they'll go through cast iron like butter. My cutters also cut unleaded inserts no problems.

yes the quality tc ones are not an issue except they are expensive, its the cheap steel ones i am worried about.
its a minefield trying to find one / set that covers 36 -46 mm without spending more than is sensible..................

Why not buy one of the old Black and Decker stone type tools - I've got one and it gives good enough results and the bonus is you can dress the stones to any angle you like.

    Or one of these :

well, it may be the work hardening but they dont touch the seats despite seeming to be in good condition

i have used one to open the inlet throat's to 38mm and they take off the lip on outer edge of seat but then just slide around smoothly when hit the main seat.
perhaps i need to apply more force do you use cutting oil or dry ?

Are the cutters actually sharp? Have a look at the leading edges with a magnifying glass.

not used a magnifier but they feel sharp. they dont have much clearance rake tho but looking at pics of other sykes sets they seem the same.
i cut the throats dry, i will get it on floor and put some weight behind cutter when i get a chance.
