Cheers for the advise Donnie. That makes sense regarding leaving a gap, allows the weld to penetrate through better and create a true joint. These attempts left a visible line on the back face where the two plates hadn't fused together.

As for the brown dusting, the Argon bottle has been stood for almost 12 months (full). I'm going to give it a shake up as the contents might have separated / settled?? Clutching at straws there perhaps . The flow-rate is 11 LPM which I seem to remember reading on some welding forum somewhere??

Don't use Argon with MIG and steel - doesn't produce a very nice weld. Bottle of CO2 or CO2/Helium mix works better.
Argon will work but in a pro's hands, besides CO2 is cheaper! But MIG aluminium and Argon is the daddy!

You want an argon/co2 mix, argoshield or specifically argoshield light , it's about 5% co2 welds spot on.
Co2 on its own (std pub gas) is messy and ark drops out a lot, ok on bigger higher power stuff .

Sorry Brain Fart on my part! - C25 gas is the stuff 75% Argon and 25% CO2. Check this out for differences between the three..... http://www.weldingtipsandtricks.com/...lding-gas.html. My peculiar combination came from hot welding thick Aluminium, bottle of Ar and Bottle of He and a Y junction........... exactly nothing like the OP required DOH!

Thanks for the information chaps, much appreciated.

After using much of my bottle of Argoshield light practicing I came to the conclusion that things will never be pretty. So today I had a "Do you know what? Fuck it!!" moment. This was HUGE for me as it means I have now welded something onto the car after 5 long years of faffing about. The results aren't pretty and I won't mind if you express your opinions. It's not much but here goes:

Small repair piece clamped in place:

Some shocking welding blobs all over the place:

    And finally ground back:

This revealed some small holes in the welds which I'll re-tack and grind back.

Just another 500 patches to do now! Sweet!

cool, progress good. as for you welds, not too bad, you need to turn the wire speed down slightly or the current up a bit, that way the weld will flow and penetrate a bit better without leaving little blobs of weld

    Hallelujah
    Well done Carl
As Graham said, less wire, more power, but don't think about it too long, get back on to the next bit. You'll soon be a dab hand

Good for you for getting stuck in and having a go! Didn't turn out to bad at all, I was exactly the same I had never picked up a welder until about two years ago when a mate got a badly rotten mk2 escort and slowly but surely I tought myself with a few tips from dad and the the escort is rot free and if also done all the welding to my fiesta too, it's literally a case of practice makes perfect, outstanding effort so far mate keep at it

Looking good! My advice is the same as the other guys and if it all goes wrong get the grinder out. Also start with the stuff you can't see and move on to the stuff you can see then. By then you'll know the score and you will feel much better about welding.
