Bike Throttle Bodies - Which ECU?

    Hi all,

Been having a think about changing from my twin 45s to bike carbs or throttle bodies on the pinto. I like the idea of having control over whats going on and not just accepting under / over fueling at certain revs.

Been having a quick look at ECUs but I have no real idea which will do the task and which wont

From a quick google I have found a ME221 which is around the £800 mark. I have also came across the megajolt and it is about half the price. I assume there are some options in the middle too?

Why the big price difference is the ME221 that much better?

If anyone's done the conversion which ecu and why?

If anyone is knowledgeable about them, which ECU and why?!

Any / all help greatly appreciated.

Why not have the twin 45 carbs set up properly … and spent the money on other parts for the car ?

Megajolt is ignition only. ME221 can do fueling too, that is the reason for the difference.
ME produce ME100 and Nodiz that is ignition only as Megajolt. ME100 is new and is said to be upgradeable to fueling (for a cost).

MegaJolt is an Ignition only system so not comparable. MegaSquirt in its many guises is the fuel and ign. controller - they potentially are cheaper but can require more user involvement as aimed more at the DIY market. Other systems are DTA, Emerald, Holley - all priced similarly. Throttle bodies are throttle bodies are throttle bodies - they all do pretty much the same thing - provide a throttle and somewhere to mount the injectors. DCOE bodies may be cheaper if you can retain your current inlet manifold?

I am not aware of anyone in Scotland who can. Happy to be proven wrong though if anyone can recommend someone?

Know a few people that can get them close from experience but don't know anyone that has a rolling road and the ability / want to set them up fully

i believe he means stick with dcoe style ITB's as they will bolt straight on your existing inlet as opposed to bike ITB's.

So going the jenvey type route and bolting on to my manifold.

Sounds like its worth looking in to.

Hadn't considered it before as thought the cost of car throttle bodies was far greater than a set from say an R1

Graham normally does a good deal on DCOE bodies, maybe he can give you a price for a full package.

I have megasquirt (ms2 v3) on my zetec and hayabusa itb's.
You will need a separate wideband o2 sensor and controller and a Laptop to tune it though.
You can buy as a self assembly kit but I bought mine already assembled.
I've only set up the idle table at the moment(its not quite ready for the road yet)
It's good if you like to have a play!
You can download a basic map to get it started then just play with it afterwards.
I do have a number of a guy who offers a mobile tuning service where you drive and he plays with the maps.
He will also use software called team viewer to remotely take over your laptop and get you a base map over the net whilst you are on the telephone to him.

A megasquirt 2 will be ample for that setup, speak to Phil at extraefi and should be able to get ECU and loom for about £450, you'll then need a trigger wheel, crank sensor (zetec ones are cheap and suitable) and if mapping it yourself a wideband o2 sensor. Add a zetec coil pack, a set of suitable injectors and you are good to go.

Re: Bike Throttle Bodies - Which ECU?

    Cheers for all the info.

Just need to decide on the route I want to go now

    Some interesting ideas.

At the moment I am swinging towards running bodies and ECU. Will just take me a bit longer to save up for it but might be worth it in the long run if I change to a more modern engine
