    Yugo Koral 55 1.6 SOHC

It's not a Ford, but... maybe it would be interesting to someone to present my Yugo.

    Anyhow...
For those who don't know, Yugo is in fact Fiat project called Fiat 144... was sold in UK, too. Last year I have bought a Yugo Koral 55 (1100ccm engine in poor condition, 55hp, 5 speed gearbox), all stock, with intention to make something like small fast street car. And this yugo is also my first car, not shared with my dad and anything like that. I'll upload a pictures bellow, in some progressive order I hope...
During a lot's of phases of the project, mine goal was changing, because I was and I am very young and trying to get as much of my incomes as posible in to the car. Of course, at least I respect some order and started from bodywork first. Body was painted, rust free and seam welded, with some more modifications to come, and of course, a roll cage was mounthed. Some pics, during all that work...

Apologies for spliting them into a few posts.

    Yugo Koral 55 1581ccm 66kw

So what if it's not a ford it's a cool little car and should go very well with that engine. The pics are a little to small to tell but it looks like a good job and you must be happy with the bodywork you have done to be confident painting it that colour

Plans are to fix everything I've done wrong in spring, until then I'll wait a winter to pass...

Thats cool - i like it - it kinda looks like a mk1 golf!
The amount of info in there i reckon you could have posted all the info in the "restorations and projects" section!
Will make an interesting read if all the photo's are a bit bigger and you give a little explanation as to what you've done - it looks like you've done a lot of work and it'd be nice to know what and how you've done it! !

Re: Yugo Koral 55 1.6 SOHC

Thank You again. Well, I'm sorry for the pics, didn't know that thumb links ain't working. It looks like I couldn't edit all my posts, so if any moderator find some extra time, it could be fixed... otherwise, you can copy image link and delete "th" prefix in pic name, in the link to see it in original resulution. Bit stupid and complicated...

As for the car... 95% of it I've done myself, for the first time in my short adult life. Yugo is like a Lego brick, it shares lots of part with Fiats, Lancias and Alfas. So, I've been installing right parts for my needs. Engine is from Lancia Dedra, originaly it was a MPI with 66kw (89hp). The bottom part of it is still stock, plans are to go on a little diet. Head is being ported and have the biggest valves combination that factory made. Cam has been bought from Cat Cams, Belgium. It's on the edge for everyday car and OEM valve springs. Twin Dell'ortos are giving the engine life from the bottom all up to 8000 rpm's. And they sound very nice, almost nice as Escort mk2. There is many things that's being replaced, it would surely be easyer to say what is left from the factory.
Roll cage has been taken from a competition car that has been driven in a National championship. Need a few bars extra... There is a lot's of things that I'm not happy with, but that is just lack of money and rutine. Hope to fix those soon, planing to do a major "service" with first sunny days, will be glad to post my work here.

Some bigger pics, to make it for bad links...

Again, thank You and I'm glad you like it. I'm open for negative comments too!
I'm feeling free to show you two yugos that is my hand job and one from friend of mine.

First one, a Yugo 1301cc that I've built with my friend, that was his car:

My dad's Yugo, veeery rusti 903cc. Full garage job, even painting... Just a few pics, it could be a thread for it self else.

    ...it's half way there.

And my friends Stipe, the best Yugo out there, surely the most detailed.

Hope nobody mind this little offtopic.

What a wicked little Yugo! Love it and your freinds Stipe (what is that?) looks spot on too

Bet it sounds the business as well with the engine mods, top work

An old neighbour of mine in the late 80's had 2 new Yugo 55 special editions, one for him and one for his wife, both had bodykits and graphics and bling wheel trims. Nice!

Thank You. Stipe is a name, he is my friend from Croatia, if that's what You're asking... There ain't no many Yugo's that has been driven everyday with twin 40's and racing cam & stuff, that's what I'm proud of the most.

I guess You mean on Yugo GVX

In the UK, as much as I know, has been exported Yugo Koral 45, 55 and GVX. After Jeremy Clarkson has made a Yugo the worst car out there, I guess they weren't popular much... But, Yugo at the time, 80's, was a head of many brands out there. Yugo America was the peak of that brand. Than the war came here... and the rest is a history. All in all, I'm very pleased You like it, many free hours and love goes in them.

And one video, that replace the lack of pics up there:

    Good work

When I was young our next door neighbour bought one of those brand new, was probably the cheapest car on the market at the time. It had a rust spot on the bonnet as soon as he got it home

Anorak time, I thought the hatchback was the 45 and the 55 was the saloon.

I like this as said kinda looks like a mk1 golf. I havent seen a Yugo over here for 10years or more. If your using a Lancia dreda engine then a 16v Delta hf turbo lump should fit too, shouldnt it?

Re: Yugo Koral 55 1.6 SOHC

Yes, it's possible to fit a DOHC engine in Yugo, but then all the concept is lost, and you gotta ask yourself "Why not a 2.0 16v turbo?". It's the same amounth of job with engine mounts. You can find on a YouTube various videos of Yugo 2.0/2.0T etc, but all of them were made for 1/4 mile and road handling is , too much understeer. There are also gearbox problem and so on. So, in my opinion the best engine for Yugo is good old SOHC, wich is better than any 8v DOHC for this car. Tuning is relatively cheap, there's lot's of potential too. Balance remains the same, so handling is still very good with few suspension mods. The only 16v engine that goes "bolt on" is bravo/brava/stilo 1.6 16v, even the gearbox is compatible. But it's more expensive at start to buy and later to tune and maintain. Carburators are caveman solution, but much cheaper and accessible.
At the end it all comes to - for the small amounth of money you can't build a faster car than Yugo with SOHC engine, at this region at least.

Hi guys, spring has come and after three winters Yugo needs some work... Here are the pics of current condition, I've discovered some bad rust reparirs, so... cut & replace is the solution. Plan is to fix all the rusty spots, paint the car bottom, engine bay, interior and exterior. Some other stuff along the way, but pisc will speak for them self when the time comes...

    To be continued...
