    Mk1 Escorts 1300gt by Broadspeed

    Hi folks,

I'm based in Australia, so info on Broadspeeds out here is....non existant....so im hoping all you British folks are able to help us out here!
I was just wondering if anyone had any pictures, info or knowledge - technical or general......on those beautiful Broadspeed Mk1 1300gt cars?

You know, the ones with the standard rear arches, and the unique large bubble arches up front, and the maroon paint scheme with the silver bonnets.

I'm sure there are a few lads over there in the UK who have some good photos of these cars hidden in shoe boxes just bursting to be dusted off!

I've seen 1 interesting picture of the engine bay.....and what sort of looks like a front mounted dry sump system.....i'm definitely keen to find out more!
Would anyone know what sort of width wheels they were running at the rear with non bubble arches? (They definitely look wider than 13x7s)Click image for larger version Name:	Broadspeed_Ford_Escort_Mk1_Paint_Set__2x30ml_76784.jpeg Views:	488 Size:	71.9 KB ID:	82935

    Thanks in advance.

    Miniliteman,
    From Australia to Holland, Thanks!!!

This is a great article. Wow, 8.5 inch rear under normal arches? Is that possible with the correct amount of positive offset?

I wish £1200 today would get you this far :P

Keep the info coming folks, this is awesome

    Many thanks from Oz,

Does anyone know what that white plastic tank and hoses would be? There also seems to be a rather large interesting shaped tank on the passenger/exhaust side....dry sump perhaps?

    Chatteris,

That footage is awesome, the escorts...my god.....but even those Minis...how they haul arse!

I found this footage of Mr Clarke and co at the Ring in 1968. Some great footage of the Broadspeed cars.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHCSLxw6K1s

But i wonder, who would know more info on the technical side of things? Would anyone know if they still exist? or whom did the fabrication work (did Broadspeed do it in house, or did they contract out as Ford did with Gartrac?

    Cheers,
    Siggy

Surprised to see a pre-crossflow in an escort..I thought they were all supplied with the then new x-flow motor. I presume Broadspeed were carrying over engines developed for the Anglia??

    Cheers, Brian.

Those Broadspeed minis were a real work of art! Some say weird....butbi find those weird things really interesting. Wernt they running 1300cc engines?

Perhaps its another topic for a different thread....but what happened to Broadspeed. Apart from Ralph Broad did they have any other famous engineering staff or engine builders?
Can anyone shed any light on this?

    Pikey this is awesome.
I really appreciate that! Until a few months ago, all id heard about was the Boreham cars...but its the teams like Zakspeed and Broadspeed with their touring cars that get my juices going.

I'm an engineer by trade, and its the unique solutions that these teams came up with that really get me excited! Keep the old articles coming!

Do you want info on just these cars as the pdf posted (and maybe the vids as well) are with cars with rear arches.

    Hi Minilite man,

I will take any info i can on the Broadspeed (and even Zakspeed) cars. I am especially interested in the 1300gt cars that I originally described, as I am investigating building a tribute/replica car of that one in particular.

Thanks so much for your time in responding.

You're welcome mate, there's a group on Facebook that often post pictures of Broadspeed cars (amongst others), you might be able to get some more information from them
    https://www.facebook.com/Broadspeed-...3243454241624/

The PDF I posted earlier came from the literature section of this forum http://bbs.rallyesportescorts.co.uk/

Also there was a replica of a Broadspeed car featured in Classic Ford magazine back in June 2011, but it was running a pinto and had the bubble arches fitted on the rear as well as the front.

All the best with your search.

    Hey Pikey15,
Yeah, nearly every car that is non mexico arched, has bubbles all around. I figured id do something different. Thus far, i have my 1300 2 door shell and have collected over the past few years bits N bobs to build a unique car. I've been lucky enough to get a 1.7L AX blocked all steel vegantune vta for which i plan to build my own dry sump system and have on ITBs.

It's just gotten to a stage where every single kitted out esky has the same fuel tank, with the same facet red top pumps, dcoes etc, and i thought...let be different.

I started this thread as i noted in the few pics id seen of the 1300gt broadspeeds that they were very unconventional....and i figured it would be a way to gather ideas and inspiration!

    Hi,
There's nothing wrong with doing things differently, I'm looking forward to seeing your build. Well done with the engine as well, that must be a rare item in Oz. I'll keep digging and see if I have any other articles on Broadspeed or other teams.

There was a Man that did cylinder head work in the early nineties with a workshop in the middle of Birmingham that's name was Bob Waterfield if my memories correct, he was an ex Broadspeed engine guru. As we walked into his premises he was sat having his lunch playing a guitar.

I think ex Touring Car Champion Andy Rouse might have had Broadspeed connections back in his Youth.

The plastic tank is a catch tank for the breathers on the rocker cover and dry sump tank. The crankcase breather probably goes in there too.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong,

On the 1300GT Broadspeeds, are those Mexico front arches grafted onto the rear?

My friend supposedly had one of the 1300 that John Fitzpatrick drove, i used to go circuit racing with him in the late 80"s as a "help along mechanic". At that time it had a JE Rover V8 engine in it, quite a quick one.

It was always thought to be a Ex Jackie Stewart car, but it came to light to be a 1300 GT from Broadspeed, he wrote to John Fitzpatrick and he wrote back saying how happy he was the car was still about.

They then (my mate and is Father) set about trying to put it back to 1300 speck but i know they came up against issue finding the correct engine for it so settled for Twin cam on Lucas mechanical injection, the car never got finished as my mates father developed dementia and got put in a home.

The car sat for a number of years in the father's leakey concrete garage, then moved to my mates moms house, she sadly passed away, then to top it all off my mate went through a very nasty divorce and his wife was trying to get hold of the car to bring it into the pot that was being divided up (the car legally was my mates Dad) so he was trying to hide it away, i think it got proved it did not belong to my mate so it never was part of the divorce.

Sadly my mates dad passed away and in the end he sold it around 2- 3 years about apparently.

That does look like the car, i remember filling the fuel up with that massive dog bowl around the filler. The bonnet also had those holes in it for the V8 engine, and the 28 years is about correct.

I must ask him again how much it went for

I suspect who ever bought it will be restoring it back to its 1970 hey day look. The problem there is all the reverse engineering required to get it there. Racing cars go through lots of changes/modernisation during their racing life.

Re: Mk1 Escorts 1300gt by Broadspeed

Ok I got more information from my mate, been on the phone for around 2 hrs !

I had to ask him if I could pass the information on before I posted about it all.
The car I used to work on was EVX256H
My mate is called Peter Edwards

The car was brought from John Edwards, JE had ran it in thunder saloons and built a MK2 for the next season.
Peter also ran in a bit in Thunder saloons and other circuit races, we used to every year go down to llandow race circuit in south wales for “all comers type race event” I used to look forward to these as it was a weekend away, I was only around 15 at the time and had many a pissed up night in the Hotel internal flirting with the welsh girls at the disco, somehow there was always a mass brawl at the end. To be honest the whole week end was a bit of a laugh,
Pete brought a roof rack and suite cases to go on the roof of the escort but the scrutineer would not pass it.
Peter always knew it was a Broadspeed built car but not that it was EVX 256H, that bit of info came about when Bill, Peters dad brought some ford books with history of the MK1 and it had chassis number in there, bill said that’s our car to Pete, pointing to a different car it was then when the car they thought they had was a different one, and in fact it was EVX 256H. This is when Peter wrote to John Fitzpatrick about it.

As I said they set about putting the car back to original spec, it still had the ZF box and rear axle from Broadspeed in it and other parts, the brakes were Metro 6R4 brakes on the front and Cosworth front callipers on the rear, JE had fitted these. Pete put these up for sale in the motor news and some guy from Scotland called him up to ask about them and what they were off, as twist of fate this guy had a set of Ap calipers off a genuine Broadspeed and after a quick chat found out they were the original ones that JE had sold him so they did a straight swap.

Bill who was also a famous racer, I Have to stop and say a bit about Bill, he was one of kind but could be very blunt, sharp, chauvinist towards Female customer’s and very opinionated, but he knew is stuff mainly A series and Minis, he ran a garage called “Bills Auto Tune” and I used to work there on Saturdays from a very, very early age like 10! . Bill really did not have much time for anyone, but he saw something in me and gave me the time of day, for this I will be always eternally grateful.

Anyway Bill was from the Midlands and had many contacts and knew the people who used to work at Broadspeed and brought them together to build the engine. Mike Kenny Built the engine, Bob Waterfiled did the head, Phill Marks supplied the Lucas injection, all of these worked at Broadspeed.

All of this I recall happened back in the early 90s, i was still going to Garage on weekends to stop and have a chat with bill, i would always go and see the car.

The car is that in the advert on race cars direct, the car was put up for sale as a bit of “dipping his toe in the water” to see what the reaction would be. Roger King Called up Peter, this was someone who Bill had had chats with about the car in the past as he used to be the works manager at Broadspeed back when the car was built.

Peter knew of Roger and he Runs Gprm Motosports, quite a famous outfit. Anyway Pete did not know what it was worth and told Roger that he wanted as much as he could for the car. Roger said don’t sell it I will be back in 24 hrs with an offer. In the meantime he had 2 people wanting the car really bad, but true to his word he said it was pending an offer and would not sell the car. Rodger came back with an offer of £95k with the promise he would restore the car back to original, he could come a see the car anytime and that Peter could drive it once it was done. This to Pete was the most important thing it was going back to an Ex Broadspeed guy and he would also get to drive the car, Deal done !
He called up the 2 guys who wanted it to tell them it was sold, the one was very Angry with Pete for selling the car, he said “how much you sell it for” £95k I will give you £125k for it, No was the reply as he had found the right guy to buy it.

That’s all I have for you, I hope it has been of some use, please forgive me spelling and grammar mistakes but I am dyslexic and this has been by far the longest thing I have typed out in a long time !

Another great story Prox of yesteryear. Not alot of help to you but I remember John Edwards car 112 well from the late 70's when we followed Hot Rod Racing. The commentator would often refer to him as the wet weather expert for his driving abilities in those conditions. His cars were always immacuately prepaired.

I remember Bob Waterfield reparing a NA Cosworth head for us in the 90's, he had a small workshop near to the middle of Birmingham.

Keep the interesting information coming through.

Fantastic outcome Prox. I can’t wait to see the car again in it’s original guise.
You might say you’re dyslexic but you can certainly write a excellent story.
It’s great how the history of some of these cars are now so well documented partly as a result of forums like this one.
