Advice and Opinion Required - Mk2 Purchase

    Hi,

I’m currently searching for a mk2 and have found something that seems to tick many boxes, but there are a couple of points that make me consider running away.

Essentially, it’s a RHD 1300 GL shell, from Germany. Otherwise it’s a great spec, good condition and the seller seems knowledgeable and experienced with old fords - I consider myself somewhat experienced having had Series 1 and Series 2 RS Turbos in the past but never a mk2, hence my reservations here.

It’s since been registered in the UK and all appears to be above board, the only physical difference I can see is Km/h clocks.

Is this something to be concerned about? What implications will this have? What do I need to consider before buying? I appreciate it’ll never be the purists choice but is it going to put off the majority of buyers, if/when I decide to sell in the future?

Thanks all, I look forward to getting involved in the discussions when I get a mk2 in the garage!

Whilst on the face of it I see nothing obvious, I would ask a) what was a RHD car doing in a LHD country? b) if it was originally a Left hooker - when and who did the conversion and c) if registered in the UK - why is it still wearing KPH clocks as I 'thought' UK registered cars are / were required to show MPH whilst KPH could also be shown, but not only? Swapping clocks is so easy wonder why it wasn't done?

Most imports with Kph clocks just put a sticker on the face to show MPH, bikes and cars.

That's the first thing i thought of. But there are lots of imported escorts these days so the thing i would be most concerned with body work if it is good everything else can be pretty much fixed. Easier to bolt on bits than repair rust.

Lot of Squaddies had RHD cars in Germany in the 80s and 90s. Good few of them might have stayed over there and went onto German plates if the owner was outside of the forces after a trade in or part ex.

    Beat me to it.
I had lots of motors over the years whilst serving in Germany and I sold some of them onto Zee Germans. We had BFG plates in those days.

so maybe the reverse has happened, been registered from uk to germany and had to have KPH clocks fitted ??

Not sure on the law but a jap import i had ran in KPH from import and registration. It was MOT'd several times by me as well no issue ? That was a long time ago though.

I was a BFG Inspector in Osnastraz in the early 90s. Used to get offered plenty of Yellow Handbags for some of the sights you used to see.
I got posted to NI for 6 months, so my Missus came back home to her parents with the kid's while I was away. Haha, me being tight, didn't want to pay to MOT and tax my car, so I left it on the BFG plates. She got pulled by the Police for a random stop and my Cavalier SRI came up on their radio as a Porsche. Being blonde she just said "yes, they're false plates".
