    Identify Pinto valve springs

Can anyone offer advice in identifying pinto valve springs ie standard vs Kent vs piper etc ? I have some I suspect are uprated singles but other than constructing a test jig are there clues ?
Wire diameter ? Paint splashes ? Etc
    Thanks.

i have checked all the standard sets i have and none have paint marks.
set that came with a piper 285 long ago have red paint splashes
set i just acquired with a kent fr32 have brown splashes
set that came with some big valves some time ago are about 4mm longer than std free length.

anyone noticed the paint splashes ?

I got springs for piper 285 and they were stiffer singles, not sure what paint splashes they had though.

Would you risk it going by a few paint marks? just check the poundage and heights no? easy enough

A pillar drill, set of bathroom scales and a ruler can make a handy valve spring tester

yes looks like i will need to test - pillar drill is a very good idea graham as i can set the depth stop.
i really only want a comparison to standard but if i set the stop to 1/2" will that give me 1/2 the psi reading or are springs non linear ?

    Re: Identify Pinto valve springs

what i would do is compress the spring to there fitted length, then full valve lift, that will give you a good idea as to what sort of cam/rpm the springs will cope with

    Identify Pinto valve springs

Well I finally got around to a quick test today.
    First up I notice I have std springs in 2 lengths. ? 47/48mm. And 44mm ?
    Are 1600 different ?
All longer springs I have were pretty consistent when compressed to 1/2" being around 67 lb.
    shorter ones were 97 lb.
given those results I don't think it's worrying about fitted and full lift with these but I may check a couple next time I get 5.

    Re: Identify Pinto valve springs

update for anyone interested in standard springs ( of which i seem to have a lot )

at fitted height of 36.5 ( kents vs9 which also seems std fitted length ) the standard seat poundage seems to be 57 lbs
at fitted height of 26.0 ( allowing typical fr32 10.5 lift ? ) the standard seat poundage seems to be 122 lbs
i say "seems" as its as accurate as easily practical but results were very consistent
i do have one set of uprated springs at 77 and 173 lbs

how do these fit in with experienced expected readings ?

and i still am looking for a cam folks

what lbs would you expect at seat and lift on say a piper 285 /bp134 or then a kent rl31 ? i thought a 40% increase seemed a fair bit
