    Thackeray washer issue

    Hi all,

i am getting some bits together to put a pinto in, later in the year and I am currently setting up some twin 40’s to go on a manifold. I have Misab rubbers between the inlet manifold and carbs, reading online the Thackeray washers should have about a .040 thou between the coils Of the spring when tightening them up.

how ever - the washers I have, are very tight at 0.40 thou out of the box, let alone when tightening them up.

is it best to buy a certain make of washer to get the right load on the carbs?

    thanks
    kris

    Like these.

They just replace the Thackeray washers.

Thanks for the advice, I have ordered some from fast road cars, is there a knack to tightnening them as to make sure they’re not over tight. Never seen them before.

    Thanks

Not really, as long as the faces of the two cup washers dont make contact and there is a clearance between them, the carbs will float slightly, you basically just dont want the carbs solid on the mounts or the fuel can froath in the float chamber, grab the carbs with both hands and make sure they flex a little - job done.

Good point I didn't realise that tbh, as I thought it was more related to making sure you had no air leaks around them, but if that were the case then just tightening them up until solid would cure that but it would then allow the fuel to froth in the float chambers...
