1975 Toyota Publica (kp30) Restoration and modify

Doing a bit of work on this '75 Publica. Like most 70's Toyota's rust is a huge problem made worse by bodged repair work over the years.

    Toyota 1000.JPG
    Panel removal.JPG
Front end partial strip down 2.JPG

First job was to strip it down get it on a spit and media blast the underside to see what was what. Naturally it was worse than originally expected. The car is eventually going back on the road with pretty standard looks with the exception of arch extensions and bigger wheels. Rear suspension, diff and gearbox is all AE86 twin cam corrolla stuff with the engine coming from a Toyota AE111 Levin - 1.6 20 valve Blacktop on factory individual throttle bodies..!!

    Engine trial fitting.JPG

The engine was never designed for rear wheel drive configuration with the oil filter for example sitting exactly where an engine mount needed to be so a remote filter kit was used, pitman steering linkages and brake master cylinder are also in the way of new engine/gearbox fitment. Luckily the factory sump clears the cross member. Power steering and A/C pumps where removed. I had to make up custom engine mounts but it is a very tight squeez lenght wise in the bay, the front pulley and bulkhead both needed modification to fit as the distributor and thermostat housing both need to protrude about 2 inchs past the bulk head.

Transmission tunnel has been enlarged also to allow the fitment of a 5 speed T50 gearbox.

It was a factory optional extra... seems to have been more popular as an option in japan though with quite alot of the import cars having one fitted.

Re: 1975 Toyota Publica (kp30) Restoration and modify

Bit of an update......now appears a rwd escort or Anglia rear axle will be used which ever is the best width to suit the car.
A few rust repair pics of the drivers side bottom of the A pillar and sill.

Honda Vtec alloy rad and push fan as there is no room for a pull fan in the bay, rad has been mounted 30mm more forward than the standard rad also. Braided lines are for a thermostatically controlled oil cooler and filter relocator.

Old Focus 1.8 discs used to mock up the new braking system, shown beside the original 200mm solid discs, I'll use new discs and rebuilt focus calipers for the finished version.

You can see the Mk2 fiesta steering rack mounted on the engine cross member, needed to ditch the original pitman linkage system as it fouled on the new box and exhaust manifold.

Trial fitting the Mk2 Escort bias pedal box, may ditch the original floor hinged accelerator pedal too.

Trial fitting the new 909 spec fuel filter and M3 fuel pump.

Fabricated and re-routed steering column mocked up, needed to be re-routed to allow clearance for the mk2 escort hydraulic pedal box, Only about 6 inchs of the original upper colunm remains, the original pitman linkage system has been removed due to lack of spares and clearance problems with the gearbox and exhaust and has been replaced with a modified XR2 steering rack.

There needed to keep it as close to the inner wing as possible till it drops below the cylinder head. Next on the list is a cover for the steering joints and bearings to keep out dirt and crap, then fab a plenum for the throttle bodies.

Re: 1975 Toyota Publica (kp30) Restoration and modify

Hi there..I'm new here. Is there a very big chance if I want to just overhaul the actual engine of the Toyota 2K engine. Unfortunately, it's difficult for me to find the overhaul kit for this engine type. Would you guys by any chance help me to find where to buy the overhaul kits?
    Thanks
    Cheers.
hope to hear from you all soon.

Your local Toyota dealer should be able to supply parts for the 20 valve engine, even though they arent available here in the UK, only on import, my local dealer can get gaskets, seals etc

Laying out the 20V engine, T50 box and AE86 prop shaft inline with the engine cross member to get a ball park figure of how much the prop needs to be shortened, need to find out the dimensions of the diff carrier though.......

Very rough mock up of the hybrid rear end.....narrow (1108mm) English axle casing with KP30 leaf springs and ARB.

Throttle bodies removed from manifold so the short trumpets can be welded on.

Standard Toyota 1000 strut and brake set up.

45 mins later......stripped, spring platform cut off and ready for blasting.

Narrow english axle stripped and ready for blasting.

24 hrs later........coilover conversion using a modified mk2 Escort kit and 260mm Ford discs machined to fit the toyota hub, just need to make a bracket to fit the Focus calipers.

Great work m8. Im doing the same conversion in a Mk2 escort. Just wondering what M3 fuel pump are you using there.
Are you using a aftermarket fuel pressure regulator?

Its a Sytec pump designed to replace the external bosch pumps used by performance bmw's, I've used a few of these in previous conversions as they are simple to wire, have a flow rate of 130+ litres per hour and fairly cheap at around €65.

For now the engine will run as standard so I'll keep the factory FPR.

Thanks for that. I think i have found the same one on ebay. I didnt get the FPR with engine so is there one that you recommend. Do you use braided lines throughout?
Also in one the pictures there is a white filter thingy (i think) that goes to the map sensor on the throttle body. Do you know where I can get this from as im missing it from my engine. Sorry about the questions, just trying to get as much info on this conversion.

Re: 1975 Toyota Publica (kp30) Restoration and modify

Front brake Caliper set up finalised, made this bracket to mount some mk6 Fiesta Calipers on the mk1 Focus discs.

Had a set of 240mm solid discs for the rear machined to match the front vented discs

Modified a set of long U-bolts so I can bolt the anglia axle to the toyota spring platforms through a 50mm lowering block

The rear axle (1959 Ford Anglia) half shaft flanges were turned down by 3.5mm so the new cross drilled and grooved discs will fit over them. Originally the wheels were bolted on to the flange surface but fitting the discs will space them out by 10mm so I have some longer wheel studs ordered.

Cut a hole in the inner wing to allow fitment of a cold air feed to the new air box I'm fabricating for the engine.

Got brand new front shock inserts (36 year old parts) from Japan courtsey of a very helpful Toyota parts manager.

Dont look like much but these machined spacers were essential to make the Ford/Toyota back end fit together properly.

Rear axle almost complete now, rear disc conversion done just need to weld on the watts linkage and then paint it.
