MK2 RS2000 brakes getting stuck - too short pushrod

    Hi all,

My brakes on my mk2 rs2000 are causing me headache. During my first (2 km) testdrive my brakes got stuck and had to forse the car home. The brakes got stuck more and more by driving, so it was caused by heat. After standing a while the brakes opperated fine.

I've got a new Ate master cilinder and a booster/servo of Capri. I think the problem is in this last thing? While bleeding I already noticed I was not able to push the brake pedal to the bulkhead and I even have no free pushrod on the pedal. I believe the solution is in the lengths of the rods just to get a free pushrod so heat is not able anymore to get stuck my front brakes. Should this problem be solved by installing a booster/servo of an RS escort (with another rod length compared to the one of a Capri)?

Thanks all for the help. I thought my car was finally ready after a rebuild of 5 years... not

Usually you can just shorten the push rod a bit. You need some free play in the rod, otherwise the brakes will bind as you have experienced.

It is also important to have the return spring fitted to the pedal, so that the pedal dead weight does not keep the brakes "on".

IMO you should not be able to push the pedal to the bulk head, the master cylinder should bottom out internally before that (so you can use the full stroke of the cylinder).

    Hi thanks for answering.
You mean shortening the push rod of the mastercilider or the rod starting from the pedal? I whould either go for another servo of escort to get some free play than shortening all other standard things.
Return spring is fitted and I have brakes just before brake lights lighten up!
In normal use I know I may not push it to the bulkhead but also not while bleeding the brakes??

    Thanks, Michiel

Have you tried opening a bleed nipple when they are binding just to confirm its residual fluid pressure holding them on?
Not wishing to state the obvious but lights need to be on before the brakes start to grip!
You must either have a minimal amount of pedal travel or the switch needs some adjustment.

The mk2 RS2000 pushrods and servo towers are different lengths for the ate and girling set ups, the ate tower and bar is slightly longer (and rarer as there were fewer ate equipped cars), I only realised this by chance when rebuilding mine. It’s possible you’re combining parts from both without realising.

Yes, that's the problem I do not have a minimal amount of pedal travel before brakes work. I found today, the rod out of the Capri serco is 1,5 cm longer than the rod out of an Escort servo. So, going to shorten the rod of the servo and make it adjustable.

Well that can be an explanation of what is happening but I'm going to make it work by shortening a rod out of the servo with 1,5 cm. I think this will give me the important free pushrod length.

It’s just a suggestion, but if your pushrod is the longer ate one you may want to find a more common one to chop, it took me a long time to find the correct original ate parts for mine. Or just try spacing the tower away from the bulkhead and the servo from the tower to see if it cures the problem before you chop anything.

Yes okay, but the problem is in the use of the servo from a capri, which has a 1,5 cm longer rod than the rod of my 1300 escort servo.

IME you may need to shorten one of them (pedal or servo side), or both.

I have had instances where is has been an easier solution to make a spacer between the servo and master cylinder, or servo and mounting. Saves you from cutting things up too. Just beware that you usually need an air tight seal between the servo and master cylinder.
