    My South African 2DR mk2 Resto/Build

So i Bought this mk2 a couple of weeks ago, its a import from south africa and was purchased from a import dealer in Andover Hampshire. i recovered it back home to Stoke. put it in my parents garage, and whilst sorting out some tools and equipment for the job, like roll over Jig, bigger compressor to paint it, most of the panels needed begged a mig welder on loan and better lighting in the garage. i started stripping the shell and thats where im up to. i dont really have a budget, thats not because im minted either. its just a case of it costs what it costs. i would love to have it running n/a YB, but want it on the road in the next 12-18 months, so that engine is probably un-realistic for now. so im thinking zetec or xe, with around 200 brake at the wheels, i want a 5 speed straight cut box, and a axle to cope with the fitted engine, this time round i will concentrate most effort and funds into the shell, and look to upgrade running gear in the future... I dont want to build a show car, just some thing that looks better than average for its age, and it will be used at weekends for a thrash during the summer and the odd dry day in the winter. it will be caged with buckets and poly windows. un-arched for now as the originals are very good and dont look to have been messed with. so far during the strip down i haven't found any signs of welded repair, neither have i found a nut that couldn't be undone with a 3/8 ratchet and had the correct amount of pins or nuts securing it to car lol. anyway thanks for looking and any advise of comments would be appreciated as have never done anything like this before. but not scared of trying either.

I tried to upload 8 pics in one go and it didnt like it so thats the car as of last night today im going to take off the front wings and front panel as they are dented to f**k and past a good repair i have found some rot that may shock some of you i know but so far ive found a bit of solid bulk head and a hole where the rear passenger foot well used to be. both rear wells have gone, boot floor looks solid front footwells are need patching so got new ones as i want to expose chassis rails where possible and rust treat as these are solid as are the strut tops. so yeah it does need a bit of work but having looked at the first 50 pages of build threads and every page of most of the mk1 mk2 escorts i declare it a good starting point with the potential to make a nice car. far worse has been saved to higher standard than i want so i have no excuses lol. no pressure like.... Jon

    Re: My South African 2DR mk2 Resto/Build

ok so i bought the car realizing it had took a knock on the front end

so today having removed the outer front wings and two front panels i offered my magnum panel up to the car

So i have a less than perfect pattern part and a less than perfect shell to hang it on, so as i have never done this before whats my options cut out damaged bit by bit this worries me only because i dont have a template to make ne piece to. search for undamaged sections from another shell? where would you start with this repair, i can see the front edge of inner wing tops need repair is this my starting point?

would you even put this back in yet ? i intend to put a bigger tunnel in it, the bulk head will need some work. will not having there make engine mock up easier? would you advise putting it on a roll over jig to start on the floor? i already have the 3 of the 4 floor plans and intend to replace the 4th. also 4 link boxes and turrets im sort of looking for advice and guidance from someone who has done this before.....please help lol

Hi, don't worry too much about that fit !
the front panel probably isn't too far out. Ford worked to some very loose tolerances back in the day.
My floor panel was 20-30mm short of the outer sills when I fitted it, making me think the floor panel was too narrow. It wasn't, it was actually within 3mm of the original across all the measured points. I had to make the outer sills fit the car, just like Ford did. I'm here to upload pics of this work on my thread, but stopped to give you some advice as you said you were new to this.
I'd suggest measure the old front panel across datum points. eg mould lines etc, not flange to flange as these get knocked about and bent to fit. compare those measurements to the magnum panel (I have one of these to btw). That's just to reassure you the panel is good. Are you fitting a new inner wing ? Bare in mind your car not only has these loose tolerances from original, but its taken a hit to. Don't remove the cross member yet, just to ensure the chassis rails stay put (it's unlikely they will move, but better safe ) Then work on fitting that front panel. You'll have to do some clamping and tightening up to loose the gaps. The shells are put together under tension, so panels are likely to spring apart, shift as you remove them. measure measure, measure and record before you take stuff off. Take reference pics and record all this info. I've got to crack on with my update as time is limited for me, but I'm happy to help you out with advice if needed. You've a really nice shell from first look so take it easy you'll get in to it as you go. Cheers Peter

Just a quick one. See you removed the cross member, not to worry, but maybe refit it, try and line it up where it was by "dirt/rust/bolt marks)
Also as a good example of build tolerance. My original tunnel had gap down the RH side, and only touched the floor panel where the spot welds were. The gap was about 15mm in several places, and even with the seam sealer ford ran in, there was a 5mm gap along a length of about 50mm which is my RH side floor and chassis was so much more corroded than the LH side. The tunnel was also twisted up on the RH side. They were of course throw away cars. Anything you do will be an improvement on original

Thank you peter i searched the net last night for mk2 diagrams with dimensions for the engine bay. however i was unsuccessful but with looking at other mk2 threads i realized that the radiator panel butts up to end of chassis rails at the bottom and will go in plumb ? so have begun to clean back the fist 10-12 inches of in the inner wings, i was not planning on replacing them, as o/s is good apart from crash damage and ns has a bit or rot from leaking battery, which i should be able to repair. so im going to cut the twisted metal out as it needs to go anyway, then see if i can seat the magnum panel flush with the chassis rail and see how that lines up with where original slam panel sat. as this was not damged up at the top only lower half. then go from there, i would of measured existing before removal but was all over the place to be fair. and the cross member came off with rack, legs ans anti roll bar during the strip down....... thank you for advice and taking your time to reply. i will post more pictures soon, im off work this week so hope to make some progress ...Jon

No worries Jon. repairing those inner wings shouldn't be too big a deal, and its the route I'd go if they are in good order.
Get your self a datum point on the bulk head to measure forward from and use a spirit level before and after fitting so you've always got some points to fall back on. And as I said, feel free to drop me a line if you get a bit stuck, or just want to sound something out. I'm happy to pass on any advice I can.
    Cheers
