    Camshaft lobe scratch

Hello there, first of all I'm sorry if this post doesn't belong here but I'm little bit desperate and I would like to ask you for your opinions regarding engine issues.

I bought a brand new Mini JCW with 2l turbo petrol engine producing 170kW. However since from the first drive from dealership I heard slight rattle in the engine. I immediately went to the dealer with this issue and they told me it's okay since the engine needs to break in. I was not happy with this answer but what else could I do.

And after 5000km on the clock the engine rattle was getting worse so I went to the dealer with this issue again and they told me shocking news - the intake camshaft lobe is scratched and they think this is the source of the rattling sound. They are currently waiting for the instructions from BMW and they will either change the camshaft or replace the whole engine.

My knowledge with engines is very limited and I'm little bit sceptical to this diagnose.

Can you guys take a look at the photo of the camshaft lobe and tell me if that scratch (groove actually) is the issue and should not be there? And if it can cause the rattling sound?

    Here are the rattle recordings:

Brand new car I'd be accepting nothing less than a new engine, or a rejection of the car.

BMW are usually very good about this (I have rejected 2 new BMW's after owning each fro about 6 months due to issues with quality)
