    e34 5 series

so with my escort being unreliable and needing some tlc i decided that I needed a new daily drive was needed...

i went on retrorides and purely by chance i spotted an advert for a 1988 525i. emailed the seller and the next day picked this up...

not bad for 240 with 6 months mot

plans are for an lsd/welded diff, coilovers and some good wheels... but first there are a lot of problems to fix...
    • every wheel is an odd size
    • the front suspension wasn't even tightened properly
    • the front suspension is very badly worn and needs replacing
    • most of the dash doesn't work, and the gauges read what they like

It also needs a full respray, but that's not a priority

the biggest shock is the cost of decent wheells. it's very easy to find a set of wheels for an old ford for less than 500. That wouldn't even buy me one wheel for this

tell me about it! 11mpg on the work run much, much better when the engine is warm though, and using less than 95% throttle trouble is, the sound is sooo addictive, especially when it breaks traction and the revs pick up real quick

    Re: e34 5 series

that's not fair, posting how much better your car is i'd love a 540 touring manual... 170bhp just doesn't cut it in a 1600kg car!

i'd also love to turbo this... plenty of room and the stock internals are good for 400bhp ok, i'll stop dreaming

no progress, cos as usual i'm waiting for other people (parts)

    Re: e34 5 series

those are some lovely looking 540's! wanna swap the e39 i'm saving for one in the winter, when I'm bored of my escort. test drove one the other week and I don't care if it's manual or auto now! they are fantastic!

the parts arrived eventually... all 'oem' quality. well, apart from the drop links, as they were sold as oem, but were made in taiwan

here's what needed replacing, excluding the bottom arms I had already fitted

they are all fitted now, and the car drives well. i also tested out my gunson tracking gauge, which is brilliant! I recommend any diy mechanic should get one. there is a lot of play in the steering. I'm going to play around with the steering box, but I feel a reconditioned one is on the cards

also, for piece of mind (no history) I bought a cambelt kit which is yet to be fitted

probably not too much progress as I seem to have a lot of love for my escort at the moment

    Re: e34 5 series

Well last night I went to Banbury to buy some odd bits and bobs to tidy this up a bit... whilst at the guys house it started overheating... hmm not good... topped up with water, let it cool a little and off I set.

It was going well, the temp gauge was dropping and the car was permorfing as it was on the way there. All seemed good. Then I glanced in the rear view mirror... smoke

Being about 35 miles from home, I decided to plough on. Made it another 5 miles or so and the car started stalling at junctions. Then it became hard to re-start

Stopped near RAF Croughton and got on the phone to my dad. I came to the conclusion that I will drive it until it won't move under it's own power, regardless of any ill effects it has on the car.

I set off again, stalling at roundabouts and junctions, until I got to the Tingewick bypass. Game over. It wasn't having any of it. Wouldn't turn over, oil dripping quite heavily from the engine, steam everywhere. Minter.

This resulted in me getting on the phone to my dad again, who kindly offered to tow me the 25 miles home.

The car will now be broken for parts and sent to the naughty yard
