Re: Tappet Setting - Pinto with BP300 Camshaft
Very true, although without knowing the full picture I’d be checking the lot.

Tappet Setting - Pinto with BP300 Camshaft
None of which explains why std cams / followers do exactly the same thing.
Thing is , as soon as it goes through the polished surface it eats follower alive as they are cast chocolate

Same as any follower, they’re case hardened

Re: Tappet Setting - Pinto with BP300 Camshaft
Okay, so where does that leave me? Do you advise just replacing the full set of followers? And keep a check on it. I would need to look to getting someone from a local garage to check geometry, not be cheap I imagine! They were set earlier in the year at a reputable garage, they never commented on the geometry being out then and it was super quiet after they set them. Also just to note, this was a fresh build last year. Please advise fellas

You can check the geometry yourselve it's not rocketscience.
The best thing you could do is note which follower goes where and have them tested for hardness.

Super quiet would worry me, Pinto valve gear is never super quiet

Re: Tappet Setting - Pinto with BP300 Camshaft
Most average Garages would n't have the faintest idea how the valve geometry works on a Pinto, even some so called tuning companies have n't got a clue.
If I were you I would firstly check closely all the cam lobes for any wear and valve springs for any sign of coil binding. Fit a new set of followers adjusted to cam manufacturers spec making sure you have the correct working angle on the followers and the ball studs are n't screwed too far out. You could always check with engineers blue where the cam wipes on the followers but it should really be obvious to the naked eye.
You could do worse than stick a strong magnet on the side of the oil filter to collect some of the metal that's worn off the follower and working it's way around the engine.

Sorry, wrong description saying super quiet but it was very tappety when I got it and the guys set them, much better! I could maybe check it myself, friend might have a dial guage. Be changing all the followers now, oil and filter and try to draw any metal out with a magnet. Thanks, keep yous posted.

Re: Tappet Setting - Pinto with BP300 Camshaft
Just waiting on Burton sending another couple of followers as there was a mix of std and high life ones. Couple of questions.
Is there a running in procedure needed for the new followers? Applied some cam lube to pads and lobes.
Changed oil filter but is it best to drain the engine oil now cold before start up? And drop it again when hot. If so, would I need to use correct 20w50 oil? Couldn't use a cheaper equivalent just now and change to correct grade. It's not a good idea starting it as is and changing oil?
Also for draining the oil, need to raise the front. Is it is fine to jack it up on the wc crossmember?
