    Mk1 build starts

My new Mk1 Twincam rep starts, full body resto, will be a period looking Twincam rep with Zetec on TB’s, 5speed box, LSD, Gaz suspension.....on Lotus steels. It’s an import shell with excellent floors, chassis ....all unwelded. Needs wings, rear arches, strut tops, front and rear panel, top bulkhead panel, few small repairs and full paint

    Re: Mk1 build starts

She’s a really nice type49 shell, not all covered up and no repairs except outer panels which are all being replaced, found a bit of rot under the strut top plates and around heater bubble, all cut out now for new magnum panels. Just ordered the full Zetec kit from Retroford with crate engine, Omex TB’s etc. Will strip it Monday, do a little porting on the head, arp’s, raise compression a bit but leave on std cams. Will be running a 3.89 LSD with BGH 5spd for nice road manners.

Yeah she’s pretty decent, few bits found after digging as always but fairly localised, gona use white raptor underneath once all cleaned up

It’s an import car, must have sat somewhere for a long time. The red lead has protected it.

    Re: Mk1 build starts

Some goodies arrived today, Retroford kit is nicely made. Although I’m amazed at how poor the Omex TB to inlet manifold port matching is, every join to the manifold has some hefty lips / overlaps, will sort that out and match the inlet to the head; std Zetec inlet ports seem to have a lot of room for improvement too, will give it some light porting, few hp to be gained just by matching manifold and a little clean up I think Click image for larger version Name:	B417293A-C856-4B5E-9593-ED228D8B8E82.jpeg Views:	432 Size:	251.1 KB ID:	83093

Looks a nice shell Erik. So has that got Twin Cam front arches, on the front and rear then, they
look like they've all been grafted on? It's an early shell too isn't it, got a pointy heater plenum....
And those radiator support panels that you can't get either, the off side one at least anyway.

    Re: Mk1 build starts

Yes mate. Very early. The arches are a mess, think a blind man did them, rears are getting cut out and new mex wings on the front. Not sure on its history but it’s an import for sure, underneath is weirdly clean, the front end rust is the worst part but nothing major. Has Borg Warner axle and typical export type49 strengthening. Making this one a nice road / show car. The Mk2 is for competition

Yeah think that’s where it came from. They love covering cars in body filler in SA too, the rear panel had 10mm of filler in places, once the panels are all done it’s getting bare metalled before prep and paint

Trying not to end up having to cover up too much, don’t want to lose the sharpness of the lines by laying on too much paint, cost me a fortune in panels but it’ll be worth it

Zetec is going to look tasty in the bay, spent best part of the day sorting the terrible Omex inlet manifold casting and matching the ports

Just shy of 110kg, saved 2.5kg with the smaller alternator, flywheel...shaved a few kg off too

    Re: Mk1 build starts

both the manifolds must be lighter than the standard stuff as well, as a zetec is stated at 125kg,so thats a good result, not far of a std duratec at 105 kgs.
how do the costs compare,is it around 3.5k to get there

    Re: Mk1 build starts

£5700 all in, would be a bit cheaper if I didn’t go for the smaller alternator and steel flywheel. Priced up all the Duratec parts too but it was a good chunk more, given I’m not chasing huge power the Zetec made more sense, plus I’m wary of Duratec std rods and would want to key the timing gears if fitting a Dura, soon starts mounting up, you can do it much cheaper on bike carbs but I want to run closed loop injection management given it’s a road car, I’ve skimmed the head a bit to raise compression and done some light porting so if I need more power in future it’s a simple cam swap away

I’ll be happy with 170hp and a nice flat torque curve, next dilemma is what gearbox was to use, thinking a BGH helical but it might work ok with a std type 9 as I’m using a 3.89 diff

why not enlarge the tunnel and go rx8 6 sp route ? would give a little edge too.

    Re: Mk1 build starts

Im not a huge fan of the rx8 route, think it a bit pointless going to all the hassle of the conversion to add a big heavy box to end up with 5 decent ratios from 6, I’d rather just fit a decent close ratio 5 spd. Plus I already have a cable clutch bias pedal box sitting, so by the time you factor in all the costs I could get a BGH helical
