Quaife QB89G In line 7 speed sequential gearbox??

I just posted in 'Pipes Pinto' build asking Andy what he thought about this gearbox but was wondering if anyone else was running it and what their thoughts were??
    Cheers

what do you want to bolt it to? your pinto? imho the ratios are too close really to suit your engine, if you had a 1600 bda which reved to 8500 or 9000 and a power band only 1500 wide it would be great, but unless your flat out your going to be changing up a gear every 50 feet

Can the ratios not be changed to suit it then Graham? Surely if he's buying it new they'll put in whatever ratios he wants?

It will be the Pinto Graham and it will be going in Kermit.
Part of the thought process is the size of it. It looks smaller than the 60G and even my older 26z was a tight fit in the Escort tunnel so I thought this would be ideal?
I understand what you're saying about the constant gear changing but would it be that bad? Plus it gives me something to do on the straights

maybe sort of, but whatever ratios you fit your talking a bottom gear of about 2.2, a top gear of about 0.8 and 5 more gears in between, so without a really high revving engine the ratios will be very close whatever you fit.

its a bit like my RS2000 was, that had a proper rocket box on a torquey 135bhp pinto, 1st gear seemed to go forever and 2,3,4th almost felt like exactly the same ratio. if you were driving slowly you were literally changing up every 50 feet, i quite often went straight from 1st to 4th gear!

in my opinion on track flat out it will work, but be unnecessarily close

I'm pretty sure it was a 3.89 I fitted as I thought that would give me the best compromise.

The car isn't a daily driver, in fact it's not even registered on the road over here. I only use it on the track at the moment so it would be flat out all the time. Granted, I'm no Andy Pipe when it comes to driving but I normally give it my all and usually on the ragged edge

We've run a gear calc to show what it would look like and as Graham has said, there's not a big jump in speeds but it's still dropping 1300-1400rpm between changes and that's a perfect change?

I'm not a racer so maybe it's just the thought of it that attracts me rather than the actual practicality part?
    Cheers

    :
presumably that's changing up at say 7000? Rev drop would be very small if you changed up at just a couple of 1000 rpm
